Easter – Go Tell Peter

March 31, 2024   /   The Rev'd. Brook Batchelor   /   All Souls Anglican Church

The accounts of the Resurrection of Jesus are factual and not made up.

  • The Apostle Paul wrote:

1 Corinthians 15:3-18 (NLT2) 3  I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said. 4  He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said. 5  He was seen by Peter and then by the Twelve. 6  After that, he was seen by more than 500 of his followers at one time, most of whom are still alive.

14  If Christ has not been raised, then all our preaching is useless, and your faith is useless. 15  And we apostles would all be lying about God—for we have said that God raised Christ from the grave… 17  And if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless and you are still guilty of your sins. 18  In that case, all who have died believing in Christ are lost!

  • Charles Colson, Special Counsel to President Richard Nixon from 1969 to 1970, who later became a Christian, said

“I know the resurrection is a fact, and Watergate proved it to me. How? Because 12 men testified they had seen Jesus raised from the dead, then they proclaimed that truth for 40 years, never once denying it. Every one was beaten, tortured, stoned and put in prison. They would not have endured that if it weren’t true. Watergate embroiled 12 of the most powerful men in the world – and they couldn’t keep a lie for three weeks. You’re telling me 12 apostles could keep a lie for 40 years? Absolutely impossible.”

Mark 16:1–8 (ESV) Entering the tomb, [the women] saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmed. 6 And he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.”

Luke 22:56-62 (NLT2)56  A servant girl noticed him in the firelight and began staring at him. Finally she said, “This man was one of Jesus’ followers!”

57  But Peter denied it. “Woman,” he said, “I don’t even know him!”

58  After a while someone else looked at him and said, “You must be one of them!”

“No, man, I’m not!” Peter retorted.

59  About an hour later someone else insisted, “This must be one of them, because he is a Galilean, too.”

60  But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.
