Friendship with God, not with the World

January 15, 2023   /   The Rev. Larry O'Connell   /   All Souls Anglican Church

  • We are under pressure to fit in with the world

  • The Problem with fitting in with the world
    1. Jas 4:4 NLT  You adulterers! Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God.

  • Light and Darkness
    1. Joh 3:19-21 NIV84 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. (20)  Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. (21)  But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.”
    2. Joh 1:1-5 ESV  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  (2)  He was in the beginning with God.  (3)  All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.  (4)  In him was life, and the life was the light of men.  (5)  The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
    3. 2Co 6:14 NIV84 Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?

  • Transformation From and To
    1. Rom 12:2 ESV  Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
    2. 2Co 3:18 NIV84 And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

  • The Smell of Life and the Smell of Death
    1. 2Co 2:14-16 NIV84 But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him.  (15)  For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.  (16)  To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life. And who is equal to such a task?

  • We must accept and proclaim that we are different and conform to the Kingdom of God instead of the world.
