On Philippians 2
October 1, 2023 / The Rev. Dr. Larry O'Connell / All Souls Anglican ChurchPhp 1:3-6 NLT Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God. (4) Whenever I pray, I make my requests for all of you with joy, (5) for you have been my partners in spreading the Good News about Christ from the time you first heard it until now. (6) And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.
Php 4:2-3 NIV84 I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to agree with each other in the Lord. (3) Yes, and I ask you, loyal yokefellow, help these women who have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.
Php 2:1 NLT Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate?
Php 2:2 NLT Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose.
Php 2:3-4 NLT Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. (4) Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.
Mat 23:5-11 NLT “Everything they do is for show. On their arms they wear extra wide prayer boxes with Scripture verses inside, and they wear robes with extra long tassels. (6) And they love to sit at the head table at banquets and in the seats of honor in the synagogues. (7) They love to receive respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi.’ (8) “Don’t let anyone call you ‘Rabbi,’ for you have only one teacher, and all of you are equal as brothers and sisters. (9) And don’t address anyone here on earth as ‘Father,’ for only God in heaven is your Father. (10) And don’t let anyone call you ‘Teacher,’ for you have only one teacher, the Messiah. (11) The greatest among you must be a servant.
Luk 14:8-11 NLT “When you are invited to a wedding feast, don’t sit in the seat of honor. What if someone who is more distinguished than you has also been invited? (9) The host will come and say, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then you will be embarrassed, and you will have to take whatever seat is left at the foot of the table! (10) “Instead, take the lowest place at the foot of the table. Then when your host sees you, he will come and say, ‘Friend, we have a better place for you!’ Then you will be honored in front of all the other guests. (11) For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
Mar 9:33-37 NLT After they arrived at Capernaum and settled in a house, Jesus asked his disciples, “What were you discussing out on the road?” (34) But they didn’t answer, because they had been arguing about which of them was the greatest. (35) He sat down, called the twelve disciples over to him, and said, “Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the servant of everyone else.” (36) Then he put a little child among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, (37) “Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not only me but also my Father who sent me.”
1Co 12:14-27 NLT Yes, the body has many different parts, not just one part. (15) If the foot says, “I am not a part of the body because I am not a hand,” that does not make it any less a part of the body. (16) And if the ear says, “I am not part of the body because I am not an eye,” would that make it any less a part of the body? (17) If the whole body were an eye, how would you hear? Or if your whole body were an ear, how would you smell anything? (18) But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it. (19) How strange a body would be if it had only one part! (20) Yes, there are many parts, but only one body. (21) The eye can never say to the hand, “I don’t need you.” The head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you.” (22) In fact, some parts of the body that seem weakest and least important are actually the most necessary. (23) And the parts we regard as less honorable are those we clothe with the greatest care. So we carefully protect those parts that should not be seen, (24) while the more honorable parts do not require this special care. So God has put the body together such that extra honor and care are given to those parts that have less dignity. (25) This makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for each other. (26) If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad. (27) All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.
Php 2:5-8 NLT You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. (6) Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. (7) Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, (8) he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.
Php 2:9-11 NLT Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, (10) that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, (11) and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Jas 4:10 NLT Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.
Joh 13:3-5 NLT Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God. (4) So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, (5) and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him.
