Scripture Focus (2 Thessalonians 2:9-15) – “The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, [10] and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. [11] Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, [12] in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.” [13] But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. [14] To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. [15] So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter.
Big Idea:
In the face of growing global deception and end-times confusion, Jesus-followers must become sober minded and guard their minds against deception.
Not being prepared will almost guarantee being deceived at the end of the age.
I. Become Vigilant (1-2) “Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we ask you, brothers, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by a spirit or a spoken word, or a letter seeming to be from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come.”
Today, many are unsettled by sensational end-times predictions, conspiracy theories, or false prophecies. Paul’s pastoral heart calls us to become steadied and readied by Kingdom truth in truth.
II. Become Informed (3-7)
A. We are warned (3a) – “Let no one deceive you in any way.”
Jesus explicitly commands us not to be deceived three times. Paul explicitly warns us not to be deceived five times. John commands us not to be deceived and test the spirit of everything twice. James commands us to be on guard to not become self-deceived. There are at least four other passages that clearly inform us and warn us to be alert against the forces of deception in the world.
B. We are informed (3) – “Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction…”
Paul writes here that the coming Day of the Lord and our being gathered together with Him will not precede a time of great apostasy and the revealing of the man of lawlessness, the antichrist.
C. We are alert (4, 8-10) – “…who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God… (8) And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming. (9) The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, (10) and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.”
III. Become Aligned (11-15)
A. God’s Judicial Response (11-12) – “Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, (12) in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.”
– Satan empowers the antichrist with counterfeit miracles, but his doom is certain. Those who reject truth by not believing it and not loving it face divine delusion sent from God himself. At this point, there is no hope for redemption for these people.
This underscores the seriousness of loving and believing the truth of God’s Word now.
B. Our hope and comfort (13-14) – “But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
C. Our response to God’s sovereign work (15) – “So then, brothers, stand firm and hold {take into custody} to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter.”
The use of the Greek word translated traditions is one of the only times in the NT where the word is used in a positive light. The word indicates the passing down of something to be held closely. Paul was charging Timothy to keep himself arrested by the truths Paul had taught him about Jesus Christ and His Kingdom.
Now What?
Do Not Be Shaken: Test every teaching against Scripture. The return of Christ is future and glorious. Resist Deception: Love the truth. Reject anything that exalts itself above God or diminishes the gospel. Stand Firm: Hold fast to biblical doctrine, pursue holiness through the Spirit, and live in light of Christ’s certain victory.
