Psalm 90 – “Teach Us to Number Our Days”
Psalm 90:2 (NIV) Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
Psalm 90:10 (NIV) Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures
Psalm 90:12 (NIV) “Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
Today’s life hack isn’t about getting more days.
It’s about getting more from the days you’ve been given.
What Does “Number” Our Days Mean?
Number- (“mana”-Heb.) carries the idea of evaluating, accounting for, or treating as precious.
Matthew 6:27 (NIV) Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
Matthew 6:19-21 (NIV) “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Earthly possessions are temporary but the things we do for the Kingdom of God are eternal.
James 4:14 (NIV) …you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

Life Hack – There are 2 paths, choose wisely
Psalms 1:1-3
Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, 2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. 3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.

Wisdom
Proverbs 3:13

There are no short cuts in building your relationship with God. It takes time.

God himself offers to instruct us, He offers to teach and counsel us in the way we should go in our lives.

God is more than capable of speaking to you, IF you give Him your attention.

It has been said that one of the ways to spell love is T-I-M-E. TIME. What we love, we give our time to.

Be confident of this, that HE who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

Your suffering is real but it isn’t final

If you want to know if God is Good, don’t start with your circumstances. Start with Jesus.
Come to Jesus.
Bring Him your Pain.
Listen to His voice.
Trust His heart.

How do I deal with people who think differently than me?
You can’t change people, you can only change yourself.
Do I want to understand them, convince them, or maintain the relationship?
10 PRACTICAL TOOLS

As Christians we should respond differently because we have an advantage.
1 Corinthians 3:16 [ESV] – “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?”
Fruit is the result of who you are – you can’t learn fruit
Galatians 5:22-23 [NIV] – 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Kindness = Chesed [Hebrew] = loving-kindness, steadfast love, useful to others
Ephesians 4:32 NKJV – BE kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.
Romans 2:4 – God’s kindness leads us to repentance.

How do I Hear God’s Voice?
God is always speaking. Hearing Him is less about mastering a method and more about cultivating a relationship.
Part 1: HEARING vs. LISTENING
Deuteronomy 6:4-5 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
“Hear” = “shema” = to pay attention, understand, and put into action
*shema is also the Hebrew word for “obey” that we see in Exodus 19:5
Active listening is the practice of fully focusing on, understanding, and responding to a speaker rather than passively hearing their words. It requires eliminating distractions, withholding opinions, and engaging with the other person to build trust and ensure mutual understanding.
Part 2: 8 WAYS GOD SPEAKS
- God speaks in a quiet, small voice (1 Kings 19:11-12, 1 Samuel 3)
- God speaks through the nudging/feeling from the Holy Spirit (Psalm 40, Luke 4)
- God speaks through other people (2 Samuel 12)
- (through books, worship songs, messages, conversations, prophetic words, etc.)
- God speaks through nature (Psalm 8:1-4, Matthew 6)
Psalm 8:1-4
O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!
Your glory is higher than the heavens.
You have taught children and infants
to tell of your strength,
silencing your enemies
and all who oppose you.
When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—
the moon and the stars you set in place—
what are mere mortals that you should think about them,
human beings that you should care for them?

Lectio divina (divine reading)***
- God speaks through the supernatural (Acts 9, Exodus 3-4)
(through dreams, visions, miracles, signs, etc.)

Ora et labora (pray and work)
Listening to God is not separated from everyday life and tasks because God is heard in ordinary faithfulness.
God often confirms that He is speaking through multiple sources.
Part 3: LEARN TO BE SHEEP
God is always speaking! How do we tune out the other voices and listen for His?
John 10:1-5 (NLT) I tell you the truth, anyone who sneaks over the wall of a sheepfold, rather than going through the gate, must surely be a thief and a robber! 2 But the one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 After he has gathered his own flock, he walks ahead of them, and they follow him because they know his voice. 5 They won’t follow a stranger; they will run from him because they don’t know his voice.
- Get to know the Shepherd
A shepherd doesn’t usually drive sheep from behind like cattle. Instead, he often walks ahead and calls them, and they follow.
Sheep learn the voice of the shepherd through daily exposure
We don’t learn God’s voice by chasing experiences. We learn God’s voice by walking with Him.
- Recognize the Shepherd
A sheep doesn’t recognize the shepherd’s voice because it attended one lesson. Recognition develops through continual contact.
The greatest way we get to know the character of God is through the Bible, so we can’t recognize His voice if we have not been reading His Word.
- Respond to the Shepherd
A sheep’s response isn’t based on understanding every word….but because it trusts the shepherd and recognizes his voice, the sheep will obey.
God’s voice becomes clearest to people who are willing to follow.
Psalm 23:1-4:
The Lord is my shepherd;
I have all that I need.
He lets me rest in green meadows;
He leads me beside peaceful streams.
He renews my strength.
He guides me along right paths,
bringing honor to his name.
Even when I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will not be afraid,
for you are close beside me.
Your rod and your staff
protect and comfort me.

***LECTIO DIVINA (Divine Reading)
Get your Bible and journal (remove all other distractions).
Choose a short passage from the Bible to read (could be a chapter or even a few verses).
Close your eyes and breathe out slowly. Prepare your heart and mind to hear from the Lord. Don’t speak or pray, but just calm yourself and listen.
- Read: read the passage slowly. Then read it again, taking time to pause as the Holy Spirit brings certain words or phrases to your attention.
- Reflect: read the passage again, reflecting on what stood out to you. Ask what God is trying to say to you. Write this down in your journal.
- Respond/pray: pray how you think God is leading you based on what you’ve read.
- Rest/contemplate: wait on God, go on a walk with him, journal, worship.

“Has science disproven faith in God?”
We all have questions about God.
1 Corinthians 13:12– For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
Has science disproven faith in God?
Peter Atkins –“Humanity should accept that science has eliminated the justification for believing in cosmic purpose, and that any survival of purpose is inspired only by sentiment.”
CS Lewis- “Men became scientific because they expected law in nature and they expected law in nature because they believed in a lawgiver…”
The Bible was not written to explain DNA sequencing, and on the other hand science cannot tell you why your life has purpose.
The Bible does not become less true because it is not answering the questions we are forcing onto it.
God is the sovereign, uncreated creator of ALL things

Human beings are made in the image of God

Which worldview accurately describes the reality we live in?
Naturalism– the worldview that nature and the physical universe are all that exist, with no supernatural reality beyond them.
Carl Sagan- “The Cosmos is all that is or ever was or ever will be.”
Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
Robert Jastrow – God and the Astronomers- The discovery of a definite cosmic beginning is an exceedingly strange development, unexpected by all but the theologians. They have always accepted the word of the Bible: In the beginning God created heaven and earth…. It is unexpected because science has had such extraordinary success in trying the chain of cause and effect backward in time. For the scientist who has lived by his faith in the power of reason, the story ends like a bad dream. He has scaled the mountains of ignorance; he is about to conquer the high- est peak; as he pulls himself over the final rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries.
James 2:19 “You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.”
Romans 10:9-10– If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.
