“Parental Priorities” 

Matthew 2:13-16 

Judges 13:8 reads, “Then Manoah prayed to the Lord: “Pardon your servant, Lord. I beg you to let the man of God you sent to us come again to teach us how to bring up the boy who is to be born.” (NIV) This verse records a request made to God by the soon to be father of Samson. One of the greatest joys and responsibilities an individual can have is to be someone’s mom or dad. There is a plethora of insight throughout the Word of God regarding parents. This lesson is designed to share various components moms and dads should prioritize for their children.

1. Parents should prioritize for their children. 

2 Samuel 14:33 

“So Joab told the king what Absalom had said. Then at last David summoned Absalom, who came and bowed low before the king, and the king kissed him.” (NLT)

1 Samuel 1:24-25 

“When Samuel was old enough to eat, Hannah took him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh, along with a three-year-old bull, one-half bushel of flour, and a leather bag filled with wine. 25) After they had killed the bull for the sacrifice, Hannah brought Samuel to Eli.” (NCV) 

1 Samuel 2:11 

“Then Elkanah went home to Ramah, but the boy continued to serve the Lord under Eli the priest.” (NCV) 

3. Parents should prioritize for their children. 

1 Samuel 2:22-25 

“Now Eli, who was very old, heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they slept with the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 23) So he said to them, “Why do you do such things? I hear from all the people about these wicked deeds of yours. 24) No, my sons; the report I hear spreading among the Lord’s people is not good. 25) If one person sins against another, God may mediate for the offender; but if anyone sins against the Lord, who will intercede for them?” His sons, however, did not listen to their father’s rebuke, for it was the Lord’s will to put them to death.” (NIV) 

4. Parents should prioritize for their children. 

Gensis 18:18-19 

“Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him. 19) For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.” (NIV) 

5. Parents should prioritize for their children. 

Matthew 2:13-15 

“After the wise men were gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up! Flee to Egypt with the child and his mother,” the angel said. “Stay there until I tell you to return, because Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” 14) That night Joseph left for Egypt with the child and Mary, his mother, 15) and they stayed there until Herod’s death. This fulfilled what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: “I called my Son out of Egypt.” (NLT) 

6. Parents should prioritize for their children 

2 Samuel 13:23-25 

“Two years later, when Absalom’s sheep were being sheared at Baal-hazor near Ephraim, Absalom invited all the king’s sons to come to a feast. 24) He went to the king and said, “My sheep-shearers are now at work. Would the king and his servants please come to celebrate the occasion with me?” 25) The king replied, “No, my son. If we all came, we would be too much of a burden on you.” Absalom pressed him, but the king would not come, though he gave Absalom his blessing.” (NLT)

Mark 5:22-23, 42-43 

“Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. 23) He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.” 42) Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. 43) He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.” (NIV)
