MATTHEW 5:1-4  (ESV) 

Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” 

“Blessed are __________, for __________.” 

MATTHEW 5:4 (ESV)

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” 

ECCLESIASTES 3:1, 4  (ESV) 

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: 4 a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

MATTHEW 9:14-15  (ESV) 

Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” 15 And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.” 

ISAIAH 53:3  (ESV) 

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 

Two of Jesus Mourning:

ACCOUNT #1:

Jesus mourns over sin leading to physical death. 

JOHN 11:21  (ESV)

Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

JOHN 11:32   (ESV)

Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

JOHN 11:33-35   (ESV)

When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled. 34 And he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus wept. 

JOHN 11:36-37   (ESV) 

So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?” 

JOHN 11:38-39   (ESV) 

Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.” 

Comfort for physical death: The of God 

JOHN 11:40-44  (ESV)

Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” 41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.” 43 When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” 44 The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.” 

ACCOUNT #2:  

Jesus mourns over sin leading to spiritual death.  

MATTHEW 26:36-38   (ESV)

Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” 37 And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” 

MATTHEW 26:39-41   (ESV)

And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” 40 And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? 41 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 

MATTHEW 26:42-43   (ESV)

Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” 43 And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.

So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words again. 

LUKE 22:39-42   (ESV)

And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. 40 And when he came to the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” 41 And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” 

Luke 22:43-44   (ESV) 

And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. 

Comfort for spiritual death: The of God 

Ephesians 1:7  (ESV)

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,

Many desire comfort but are to: 

1) Acknowledge the Glory of God 

2) Accept the Grace of God
