MESSAGENOTES
DO NOT MURDER
SEPTEMBER 26/27, 2020

Exodus 20:13 (NIV)

“You shall not murder.”

What the 6th Commandment DOES NOT mean:

1. Does not prohibit the killing of animals

Genesis 9:1-3 (NCV)

Then God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Have many children; grow in number and fill the earth. 2Every animal on earth, every bird in the sky, every animal that crawls on the ground, and every fish in the sea will respect and fear you. I have given them to you. 3Everything that moves, everything that is alive, is yours for food. Earlier I gave you the green plants, but now I give you everything for food.

2. Does not prohibit capital punishment

Leviticus 24:17 (NCV)

“Whoever kills another person must be put to death.”

Romans 13:1-5 (NLT)

Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. 2So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and they will be punished. 3For the authorities do not strike fear in people who are doing right, but in those who are doing wrong. Would you like to live without fear of the authorities? Do what is right, and they will honor you. 4The authorities are God’s servants, sent for your good. But if you are doing wrong, of course you should be afraid, for they have the power to punish you. They are God’s servants, sent for the very purpose of punishing those who do what is wrong. 5So you must submit to them, not only to avoid punishment, but also to keep a clear conscience.

3. Does not prohibit going to war

Ecclesiastes 3:8 (NLT)

A time to love and a time to hate. A time for war and a time for peace.

What the 6th Commandment DOES mean:

1. Does prohibit killing yourself—suicide

Romans 14:7-8 (NLT)

For we don’t live for ourselves or die for ourselves. 8If we live, it’s to honor the Lord. And if we die, it’s to honor the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NLT)

Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, 20for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.

2. Does prohibit so called “mercy” killings—euthanasia

Job 12:10 (GN)

It is God who directs the lives of his creatures; everyone’s life is in his power.

3. Does prohibit abortions

Psalm 139:13-16 (NLT)

You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. 15You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. 16You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.
