HONOR YOUR PARENTS
September 19/20, 2020
Exodus 20:12 (NIV)
“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.”
Matthew 22:37b-40 (NLT)
“ …‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”
How do you fulfill this Commandment?
How do you honor your parents?
Stage #1: As a child, I honor my parents by obeying them!
Ephesians 6:1-3 (NCV)
Children, obey your parents as the Lord wants, because this is the right thing to do. 2The command says, “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first command that has a promise with it—3“Then everything will be well with you, and you will have a long life on the earth.”
Stage #2: As a young person, I honor my parents by accepting and appreciating them!
Romans 15:7a (NLT)
“Therefore, accept each other just as Christ has accepted you…”
Stage #3: As an adult, I honor my parents by respecting them and helping them!
Proverbs 3:27-28 (NLT)
Do not withhold good from those who deserve it when it’s in your power to help them. 28If you can help your neighbor now, don’t say, “Come back tomorrow, and then I’ll help you.”
Dad/Mom: It’s easier for your children to honor you when you choose to live honorably.
Ephesians 6:4a (TLB)
And now a word to you parents. Don’t keep on scolding and nagging your children, making them angry and resentful. Rather, bring them up with the loving discipline…
