GOD WANTS US TO ASK
Matthew 6:5-10
Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” Luke 11:1 ESV
WEEK 1: Become battle ready with God’s PRAYER ARMOR.
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. Ephesians 6:11 ESV
- Belt of Truth
- Breastplate of Righteousness
- Shoes of Peace
- Shield of Faith
- Helmet of Salvation
- Sword of the Spirit
Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak. Ephesians 6:18-20 ESV
To STAY IN the battle we need to PRAY IN the battle!
WEEK 2: The Person of Prayer
Prayer includes the person praying… (Us)
the Person being prayed to, and… (God)
the person(s) being prayed about… (Needs)
the person(s) being prayed with. (Church)
“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.” Matthew 6:5 ESV
1. The person of prayer is servant with a HEART SET on The Master.
“But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” Matthew 6:6 ESV
2. The person of prayer finds reward from the Father in SECRET.
“And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Pray then like this:” Matthew 6:7-9 ESV
3. The person of prayer follows the PATTERN Jesus provides.
“Our Father in heaven” Matthew 6:9 ESV
4. The person of prayer is addressing our HEAVENLY FATHER.
“hallowed be your name.” Matthew 6:9 ESV
5. The person of prayer is proclaiming the HOLINESS OF GOD.
“Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Matthew 6:10 ESV
WEEK 3: Jesus is now teaching us what to PRAY FOR.
“Your kingdom come.” Matthew 6:10 ESV
#1: We are to pray for the Kingdom of God to COME.
Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” John 18:36 ESV
Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people. Proverbs 14:34 ESV
In past generations he allowed all the nations to walk in their own ways. Acts 14:16 ESV
“And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:18 ESV
“As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.” 7 I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. 8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.” Psalm 2:6-8 ESV
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6 ESV
Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. Revelation 20:4 ESV
“I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.” John 17:14 ESV
But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 3:20 ESV
And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile. 1 Peter 1:17 ESV
For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God. Hebrews 11:10 ESV
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Matthew 6:33 ESV
From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Matthew 4:17 ESV
“Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.” Matthew 22:9 ESV
Which Truth will stick to your prayer, “Your kingdom come”?
“Your will be done.” Matthew 6:10 ESV
#2: We are to pray for the Will of God to BE DONE.
“I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.” Psalm 40:8 ESV
Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.” John 4:34 ESV
Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 ESV
But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 2 Peter 3:8-9 ESV
“And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.” Luke 11:9-10 ESV
And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. Luke 18:1 ESV
For this is the will of God, your sanctification…7 For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness. 1 Thessalonians 4:3,7 ESV
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:1-2 ESV
What Truth will stick to your prayer, “Your will be done”?
“On earth as it is in heaven.’ ” Matthew 6:10 ESV
#3: We are to pray for what is True in Heaven to be TRUE ON EARTH.
Hallowed be your name, on earth as it is in heaven.
Your kingdom come, on earth as it is in heaven.
Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
“My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” 39 And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” Matthew 26:38-39 ESV
And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” Luke 9:23 ESV
He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! Revelation 22:20 ESV
