“DOING THANKFUL”
vs “BEING THANKFUL”
Luke 17:11-19
We learn what “doing thankful” looks like.
We learn the difference between “being thankful” or “feeling thankful” and actually “doing thankful.”
Those who suffer from a serious skin disease must tear their clothing and leave their hair uncombed. They must cover their mouth and call out, “Unclean! Unclean!” 46 As long as the serious disease lasts, they will be ceremonially unclean. They must live in isolation in their place outside the camp. Leviticus 13:45-46 NLT
- You can’t come within 6 feet of any person (including family).
- You have to wear torn clothing.
- You have to keep your hair messed up.
- You have to cover your face.
- You have to cry out “Unclean! Unclean!” whenever someone approaches you.
- You have to live alone. You can only hang out with other lepers.
A leper (in biblical days) was considered cursed by God!
Uzziah, who was holding an incense burner, became furious. But as he was standing there raging at the priests before the incense altar in the LORD’s Temple, leprosy suddenly broke out on his forehead. 20 When Azariah the high priest and all the other priests saw the leprosy, they rushed him out. And the king himself was eager to get out because the LORD had struck him. 21 So King Uzziah had leprosy until the day he died. He lived in isolation in a separate house, for he was excluded from the Temple of the LORD…
2 Chronicles 26:19-21 NLT
As Jesus continued on toward Jerusalem, he reached the border between Galilee and Samaria. 12 As he entered a village there, ten men with leprosy stood at a distance, crying out, 13 “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” 14 He looked at them and said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed of their leprosy. 15 One of them, when he saw that he was healed, came back to Jesus, shouting, “Praise God!” 16 He fell to the ground at Jesus’ feet, thanking him for what he had done. This man was a Samaritan. 17 Jesus asked, “Didn’t I heal ten men? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?” 19 And Jesus said to the man, “Stand up and go. Your faith has healed you.” Luke 17:11-19 NLT

#4: Only one man (only one leper) actually did something to express his thankfulness for the miracle he received!
One of them, when he saw that he was healed, came back to Jesus, shouting, “Praise God!” 16 He fell to the ground at Jesus’ feet, thanking him for what he had done. Luke 17:15-16 NLT
The first thing this man did was to praise God out loud!
The second thing this man did was to fall at Jesus’ feet and worship Him!
The third thing this man did was to express his thankfulness to Jesus for what He had done.
