SEEKING GOD WHEN ANXIETY SEEMS OVERWHELMING

MATTHEW 6:25-34 (ESV)
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?  26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore, do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

34 “Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

ANXIETY IS INCREASED WHEN OUR FOCUS IS WRONG!

“Worry is a thin stream of fear that trickles through the mind, which, if encouraged, will cut a channel so wide that all other thoughts will be drained out.”

MATTHEW 6:21 (ESV)
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Things that we find comfort in that aren’t God.

JOB 38:41 (ESV)
Who provides for the raven its prey, when its young ones cry to God for help, and wander about for lack of food?

Things that bring us security that aren’t God.

EPHESIANS 1:18-19 (ESV)
having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might

Things that bring us a false sense of control that aren’t God.

PHILIPPIANS 4:11-13 (ESV)
Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Acceptance is the solution to our problem!

KEEPING OUR EYES ON GOD THE COMFORTER, OUR SECURITY, AND THE LIFE-GIVER.

MATTHEW 6:10 (ESV)
“Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

COLOSSIANS 3:2-3 (ESV)
Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

ISAIAH 26:3-4 (ESV)
You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. 4 Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.

  1 JOHN 2:15-17 (ESV)
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
