POOR IN SPIRIT

MATTHEW 5:1-3 (NIV84)
Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him,  2 and he began to teach them, saying:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
3 “Happy are those who know they are spiritually poor.” (GNT)
3 “God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him.” (NLT)
3 “They are blessed who realize their spiritual poverty.” (EXB)

Jesus is saying that a person is truly happy when they understand that apart from God they have no hope! That apart from God they are doomed!

#1—A person that is “poor in spirit” will trust and depend on God’s wisdom, not their own!
PROVERBS 14:12 (NLT)
There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death.

#2—A person that is “poor in spirit” will trust and depend on God’s strength, not their own!
PSALM 71:16 (NKJV)
“Blessed are those whose strength is in you…”

PSALM 73:26 (NLT)
“My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.”
