LUKE 19:28-40 (NIV)

After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30 “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”

32 Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”

34 They replied, “The Lord needs it.”

35 They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road.

37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:

38 “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”

39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”

40 “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”

1. BACKGROUND
   1. Jesus had a DESTINY to fulfill. (Luke 19:10; John 3:14-15)
   2. Passover was a WORLDWIDE attraction. (Luke 19:37; John 12:12; Acts 2:8-11)
   3. The crowd’s expectation was PREMATURE. (Luke 19:11; 18:31-34; John 12:16) 

2. ANTICIPATED KINGDOM…
   1. Never ENDING. (Isaiah 9:7; Daniel 7:14)
   2. Over ALL nations. (Daniel 7:27)
   3. Perfect JUDGMENT, PEACE. (Isaiah 11:3-6)
   4. POWERFUL (Daniel 2:44)
3. THE COMING WEEK…
   1. Saturday: Dinner with SIMON & LAZARUS
   2. Sunday: Entry to JERUSALEM
   3. Monday: TEMPLE cleansing
   4. Tuesday – Wednesday: TEACHING/Examination
   5. Thursday: Last Supper, GARDEN
   6. Friday: Trial, CRUCIFIXION, Burial
   7. Saturday: QUIET
   8. Sunday…
4. WHY DID JESUS COME ON THIS DAY?
   1. TIMING was perfect! (Galatians 4:4)
   2. The day of the LAMB! (John 1:29)
   3. The week of REMEMBRANCE (Luke 22:1; Exodus 12:21:1-32, 42-51)
5. ON THIS DAY…
   1. Jesus presented Himself as God’s LAMB in our behalf. (John 1:29; 36; 1 Peter 1:18-19; Hebrews 9:27)
   2. Jesus was carefully EXAMINED and found FAULTLESS (Luke 23:15, 22; John 18:38; 19:6)
   3. Jesus became our MEDIATOR in heaven before God (Hebrews 9:15, 24)
6. JESUS’ MOTIVATION
   1. That we might KNOW the Father (John 1:14; 14:7-10; Col 1:15) 
   2. To DEMONSTRATE His Father’s great love for us (Romans 5:8)
   3. To remove every OFFENSE and shame so that we might come to Him in joy! (Ps 51:7; Isa 1:18; Romans 8:1-4)
7. QUESTIONS…
   1. If you were to stand before Jesus and were able to have a private conversation with Him, what would you SAY to Him?
   2. What would JESUS say to you?
