20 Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. 21 So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. John 12:22-22 ESV
“My hour has not yet come.” 2:4
“The hour is coming.” 4:21
“The hour is coming, and is now here.” 4:23
“His hour had not yet come.” 7:30
“His hour had not yet come.” 8:20
What hour?
The time for Jesus’ death, resurrection, and exaltation: His glorification.
23 And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.” John 12:23 ESV
“‘Father, save me from this hour’?” 12:27
Jesus knew that his hour had come. 13:1
“Father, the hour has come.” 17:1
“We have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father.” 1:14
“I do not seek my own glory.” 8:50
“It is my Father who glorifies me.” 8:54
“Father, glorify your name.” 12:28
31 “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once.” John 13:31-32 ESV
5 “And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.” John 17:5 ESV
24 “Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.” John 17:24 ESV
24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” John 12:24 ESV
“a grain of wheat” — Jesus
“falls into the earth and dies” — Crucifixion and Burial
“it bears much fruit” — Resurrection and Life
51 “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” John 6:50-51 ESV
25 “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” John 11:25-26 ESV
25 “Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.” John 12:25 ESV
“Whoever loves his life” — Love of self
“Loses it” — Death by self
“Whoever hates his life” — Love of Jesus
“Will keep it” — Life by Jesus
26 “If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.” John 12:26 ESV
“Follow me.” 1:43 “Follow me.” 21:19
1 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.” John 14:1-3 ESV
A radical instruction from Jesus:
“Hates his life in this world.” 12:25 “He must follow me.” 12:26
27 “Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name.” John 12:27-28a ESV
A radical example in Jesus:
- “Now is my soul troubled.”
- “And what shall I say?”
- “‘Father, save me from this hour’?”
- “But for this purpose I have come to this hour.”
- “Father, glorify your name.”
18 “The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood.” John 7:18 ESV
29 “And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.” John 8:29 ESV
50 “Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge.” John 8:50 ESV
Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” 30 Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not mine.” John 12:28b-30 ESV
- The crowd needed the benefit of hearing the voice of God.
- The outcome of a troubled soul was already resolved in Jesus.
- The disciples would “look back” and have divine confirmation.
- The alerting of a turning point in redemptive history.
31 “Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. 32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” John 12:31-32 ESV
33 He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die. 34 So the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” John 12:33-34 ESV
35 So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them. John 12:35-36 ESV
