SIN ALWAYS SPIRALS
THE SPIRAL OF SIN…
2 Samuel 11:1 (ESV) – In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem.
James 4:17 (ESV) – So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.
Genesis 4:16 (ESV) – Then Cain went away from the presence of the LORD and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
Psalm 1:1–2 (ESV) – Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.
2 Samuel 11:2 (ESV) – It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful.
No Israelite house had running water at that time, bathing often may have been performed privately, in the enclosed courtyard that was a part of many Israelite houses; alternatively, it may have been done openly near the city’s public water source. There is no indication in the text that the woman deliberately positioned herself so as to entice David.
2 Samuel 11:3 (ESV) – And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?”
Genesis 3:6 (ESV) – So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.
“In our members there is a slumbering inclination toward desire which is both sudden and fierce. With irresistible power, desire seizes mastery of the flesh. All at once, a secret smoldering fire is kindled. The flesh burns and is in flames. In this moment, God is quite unreal to us. And Satan does not here fill us with hatred of God, but with a forgetfulness of God. The lust thus aroused envelopes the mind and the will in deepest darkness. It is here that everything in me rises up against the Word of God.” – Dietrich Bonhoeffer
2 Samuel 11:4–5 (ESV) – So David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her. (Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned to her house. And the woman conceived, and she sent and told David, “I am pregnant.”
2 Samuel 11:14–15 (ESV) – In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah. In the letter he wrote, “Set Uriah in the forefront of the hardest fighting, and then draw back from him, that he may be struck down, and die.”
2 Samuel 11:27 (ESV) – And when the mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son.
Proverbs 14:12 (ESV) – There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.’

THE SPIRAL WAS BROKEN
Romans 6:23 (ESV) – For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John 3:16 (ESV) – “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
