***Holy Ghost and Holy Spirit are used interchangeably

6 FOUNDATIONAL TRUTHS ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Holy Spirit is God, the third person of the trinity NOT an “it”.

“For there are three that bear record in heaven, the father, the word, and holyghost; and these three are one” -1 John 5:7

The Holy Spirit DOES impact our emotions, but He is not here ONLY for us to be “emotional”.

The Holy Spirit is not something you “catch”.

There are MANY WAYS that we outwardly express the inward work of the Holy Spirit.

Common symbols/metaphors for the Holy Spirit used in scripture are:

The function of the Holy Spirit is to CARRY OUT and then PROTECT (seal, oversee, watch over) the will of the father and the action of the son.

THE MAIN IDEA:

The Holy Spirit is always

  1. Present and at work in

“In the beginning God (Elohim) created [by forming from nothing] the heavens and the earth. [Heb 11:3] The earth was formless and void or a waste and emptiness, and darkness was upon the face of the deep [primeval ocean that covered the unformed earth]. The Spirit of God was moving (hovering, brooding) over the face of the waters.” – (Genesis‬ ‭1‬:‭1‬-‭2‬ ‭AMP‬‬)

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. (Genesis 2:7)

2. Present and at work in

  • Came UPON people to empower them to do good and miraculous works.
    • Azariah (2 Chronicles 15)
    • Gideon (Judges 6:34)
    • Jahaziel (2 Chronicles 20)
    • Saul (1 Samuel 10)
    • Samson (Judges 15)
    • David (1 Samuel 16)
    • Ezekiel (Ezekiel 2:1-2)
  • Arranging the events of life to lead up to Jesus AND the writing of the scriptures

3. Present and at work

But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. (Romans 8:11)

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit (1 Peter 3:18)

4.Present and at work (Acts 2:1-47)

  1. Filled the disciples and all who were waiting in the upper room with power
  2. Interpreted the gospel in different languages
  3. Caused 3,000 people to become Christians
  4. Started the movement of Christ followers and the establishment of “the church”
  5. Empowered the early apostles to do miracles that would compel and convince people to follow Jesus

5. Present and at work

  1. Draws us and shows us that we need God (John 6:44, 1 Corinthians 12:3)
  2. Highlights the gospel
  3. Brings our spirit to life when we accept Jesus (Romans 8:9-11)
  4. SEALS us and our salvation in Christ (Ephesians 1:3-14)

6.Present and at work (through something called which is: the process of the Holy Spirit transforming us to be more like Christ, and then working through us to transform the world around us.)

  1. Comforts you (John 16:7)
  2. Reminds you of Jesus (John 14:26)
  3. Convicts of sin, encourages repentance, and helps us resist future temptation (
  4. Reveals things
    1. Explains and interprets the word of God
    2. Exposes things that are harmful
    3. Encourages things that are Good
  5. Intercedes for us

7. Present and at work (And you shall receive POWER, GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT, to do great exploits that show Jesus and COMPEL people to follow Him)

  • Gives us POWER
    • “And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.” (1 Corinthians 2:3-5)
    • ‭‭But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judæa, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. (Acts 1:8)
  • Gives us spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12:1-11)
    • Word of Wisdom
    • Word of Knowledge
    • Gift of Faith
    • Gift of Healing
    • Working of miracles
    • Gift of Prophecy
    • Gift of tongues
    • Gift of interpretation of tongues
  • Gives boldness and courage to use our gifts

CONCLUSION

Do you know the power that’s in you? How would you live if you believed that everything we just learned about who the spirit is, is now IN YOU, daily, at every second?

Three categories of the Spirit’s power:

power (What he does IN you)

power (What he does THROUGH you)

Power (What He does AROUND you)

The Holyghost, or the Holy Spirit is always present and always at work. Are we noticing, and are we submitting to, embracing, and living out the power of the Spirit in our lives?
