Background for the Lord’s Supper

  • The last plague in (death of firstborn) was a symbol of the gospel.
  • The Jews celebrated the in Egypt every year (night of Jesus’ arrest).

Basics to understand about the meaning and purpose of the Lord’s Supper

  • It is one of the two of the church (along with baptism), v. 23.
    • Commanded by Jesus, Luke 22:14-20.
      • New covenant with God: no longer based on the law but on Jesus’ sacrifice.
    • For as an expression of faith in Jesus.
  • It is an expression of faith that looks to the past and to the future.
    • Faith in the : Jesus gave His body and blood as a sacrifice to take our judgement.
    • Faith in the future: Jesus is to complete His work, v. 26.
      • The gospel is the heart of missions – proclaim it!
  • It is an important part of commitment and spiritual growth.

    • As food nourishes our body, the Lord’s Supper nourishes our , John 6:53-57.

    • It is a time to reflect on our relationship with God, 1 Corinthians 11:27-29.

      • It is important to approach the Lord’s Supper with a attitude.
        • We can’t worship from the heart when we are holding on to sin in our lives.
        • Through we can turn back to God at any time with a clear conscience.

The Lord’s Supper is a time to:

  • Celebrate the forgiveness and eternal life Jesus makes possible.
  • Approach God with a heart of gratitude and worship.
  • Draw closer to God and each other in the church.
