Actually Jesus Didn’t Leave

Scripture Reading Acts 2:1-17

  • Jesus provided for us teaching AND his on the cross and his from the grave.
  • He therefore showed us what he did FOR us and what the obedience he expects FROM us!
  • The New Testament book “Acts of the Apostles” could also be called the “Acts of through the apostles and other disciples as they are filled with and led by the Holy .”
  • After Jesus rose from the dead and appeared over 40 days and promised he would go away and the Holy Spirit would come, on the Jewish holy day called about this many disciples were praying for and then were filled with the Holy Spirit: .
  • The Spirit came on them all as though wind and fire, in fulfillment of the prophecy given hundreds of years earlier by

Therefore the Old Testament was ‘completed’ in these ways:

  1. The sacrificial lamb for all sin was actually, perfectly, the Son of God named .
  2. The temple was replaced by our own , that are filled with the Holy Spirit.

This is all believed and taught not just by us ‘Gentile’ Christians, but by / ‘Completed’ Jews today who are ethnically and religiously just like the original disciples!

  • THEREFORE WE SHOULD ALL DECLARE:
  1. I believe in Jesus as Savior
  2. I obey Jesus as Lord, Leader, Master
  3. Holy Spirit, fill me and me!
  • And then expect grace!

THUS AS WE READ ACTS 2:38-47 we see hyperbolic summary, of a wonderful Spirit-filled life that we too can and should live out in ways that are generally consistent with this ‘ancient history’ summary. But, do NOT lose heart when our daily lives and groups and churches don’t look THIS perfect…because as you read the rest of Acts and rest of the Bible you’ll see that THEY WEREN’T ABSOLUTELY PERFECT all the time in all things either! Accept the imperfections, strive to live after the example of the hyperbole, and you’ll see the Holy Spirit transform your life and help you in ways that will be powerful and beautiful!!

—–DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:——-

  1. How has God made a difference in your life EXTERNALLY? (Provided, protected, helped…?)
  2. How has God made a difference in your life INTERNALLY? (Encouraged, guided, gave guilt that led you to get forgiven, gave hope, helped you have words to say?

READ Acts 2:38-47

  • What kind of prayer do you think the disciples had prayed to receive the Holy Spirit at first?
  • Now, after looking at this response of Peter’s, what do you think we should pray NOW to receive the Holy Spirit (or get re-charged and revived anew by the Spirit)?
  • What evidence are you seeing now that the Holy Spirit is alive and working through you as a follower of Jesus?

PRAYER: “Father God, and Son of God Jesus, send and fill me with the Holy Spirit – and help me to see the Spirit’s activity in my life more clearly this week as I seek to obey the teachings of Jesus and the promptings of the Holy Spirit!”
