Scripture Reading: James 5:16-20

Our sermon message series is on of heart and life. Early Christians called it The of life as they followed Jesus as their Savior and Leader. Living this way, we avoid temptation, stop sinning, listen to momma’s advice when it’s God-centered, and run toward things that are good, holy, and perfect in love. What else do we need for this Way of life?

This Memorial Day weekend we remember that “The decisions of the become the consequences for the .” — July 16, 2010 Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Phillips.

YOU MUST BE to follow the Way of Jesus!

Remember the -out effect.

U.S. Navy SEAL Jocko Willink quotes:

“Once people stop making excuses, stop blaming others, and take ownership of everthing in their lives, they are compelled to take action to solve their problems.”

“You must own everything in your world. There is no one else to blame.”

Following the Way of Jesus means we are to be accountable to and to .

Romans 14:12 “…each of us will give an of ourselves to God”

James 5:16  “Therefore your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

James 5:19-20 “My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, remember this: Whoever a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.”

Accountability includes and the truth in love:

  • As led by the Spirit
  • In relationship / friendship as possible, one on one or small group
  • Regularly, honestly

John Wesley wrote not long after his spiritual “Aldersgate Street” experience in which his heart was “strangely warmed” in the midst of a Bible study group:

“Holy solitaries’ is a phrase no more consistent with the Gospel than holy adulterers. The Gospel of Christ knows no religion but social; no holiness, but social holiness.”

Discussion Questions:

  1. Who do you allow to correct you in your professional life? At church? In your personal life?
  2. Why do you, or don’t you, easily allow people to correct you?
  3. Who allows you to correct them?

READ: James 5:16-20, and Romans 14:12

A. When will you ultimately have to give an account of yourself to God, and what will that be like?

B. What do you need to confess now?

C. What do you need someone to pray over you for?

PRAYER: “God our Father, help me to see what I need to confess, to whom, and how I need to accept correction and encouragement. Then help me to see who I need to correct with deep compassion, humility, and encouragement. Finally, help me to ACT on what you are revealing! Amen.”
