Why Jesus Left

June 1, 2025   /   Cornerstone Global Methodist Church

The STORY of the World according to the Bible:

              THE Narrator is not us…

             …but we can tell stories!

        Revolt against the Author,

    who’s correcting the Story…

                 …via a Hero who dies & rises!

THE LAST CHAPTER of the STORY: people who are following the Hero after He’s left and has then sent the Holy , until He ends it all!

John 16:7  “But very truly I tell you, it is for your that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.”

Acts 1:4-8   ” Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about…you will receive when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my  in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of   the earth.”

ACTS describes the model : which is the people empowered by the Spirit to be his disciples and be witnesses for Jesus the risen Savior all over the world.

As a part of that model, we are humbled, inspired, and motivated by the power of the Creator God whose creation was corrupted but who has been reaching out again and again to us to guide and save us.

The model Church contains people who humble themselves before God, follow Jesus as leader and savior, and are then empowered by the Holy Spirit JUST AS JESUS PLANNED IT when he left us!

He left so we can live lives empowered by the Spirit that include:

  • to say
  • that change lives through the Gospel
  • – sacrificial, mind-blowing love!

YOU are empowered with THOSE things to live a the life of a powerful witness for Jesus in your context!

  • Just as did when he preached the first Christian sermon after Jesus’ resurrection, in the midst of people who’d wanted to kill Jesus.
  • Just as did in front of the pagans who literally threw her to the lions and tigers in the Roman colosseum.

YOU can be immensely loving, kindly brave, and live and speak the message of salvation to people that will have a lasting impact. IMAGINE YOUR LIFE INCREASINGLY LIKE THIS, this very summer!

Discussion Questions:

  1. What would it have been like to be a disciple of Jesus when He was walking and talking on earth? What would you have been excited about?
  2. What are you disappointed about, in terms of Jesus NOT walking and talking physically / visibly in our midst today?
  3. What do you wish you could do with Jesus right now?

READ: John 16:1-7  &  Acts 1:1-9

A. How could it possibly be GOOD for us, for Jesus to have ascended to heaven?

B. What is JESUS’ role in your life right now, vs. YOUR role? That is, what can we expect Jesus to do, and what is Jesus expecting you to do?

C. Since the power of Jesus is given to us now in the Holy Spirit who lives in and through us, what kinds of things might the Spirit want to do through you this year?

PRAYER: “God our Father, help me to see what your Holy Spirit is yearning to do to me and through me this year. I yield to your will, and I am ready to use my will and decisions and efforts to accomplish whatever you lead me to do. Amen.”
