Warnings And Wisdom | Messy Church, Part 5

“If you do this/that you are going to hurt yourself

1 Corinthians 4:14

I do not write these things to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children.

5 Warnings/Wisdom from Paul:

1. Be careful how you define success

1 Corinthians 4:1-2

This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.2 Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.

1 Corinthians 4:3

But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court.

2 Corinthians 10:10

For they say, “His letters are weighty and strong, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech of no account.”

1 Corinthians 4:4-5

For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. 5 Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God.

How do we define success?

Servant

Steward

Faithful

2. Arrogance and pride cause division in the church

1 Corinthians 4:6

I have applied all these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, brothers, that you may learn by us not to go beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up in favor of one against another.

puffed up – inflated

An exaggerated view of self at the expense of others

How do you know you have pride?

You’re right 99% of the time

You give yourself the benefit of the doubt

You always want your way

Others’ way of doing things is weird

Pride reduces our capacity to learn from others.

Pride also undermines our ability to trust others.

1 Corinthians 4:7

For who sees anything different in you? What do you have that you did not receive? If then youreceived it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?

James 1:17

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights,

3. The world’s wisdom is NOT that smart

1 Corinthians 4:8-10

Already you have all you want! Already you have become rich! Without us you have become kings! And would that you did reign, so that we might share the rule with you! 9 For I think thatGod has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death, because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels, and to men. 10 We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute.

You can have all the money in the world…but still lose your soul.

You can have all the knowledge in the world…but still be lost.

You have all the power in the world…but not be able to change yourself.

You can be known by many in the world…but have no one who really knows you.

What is the wisdom of the world today?

Philippians 4:12-13

I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

1 Corinthians 4:11-13

11 To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are poorly dressed and buffeted and homeless,12 and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; 13 when slandered, we entreat. We have become, and are still, like the scum of the world, the refuse of all things.

4. Be aware of who is influencing you

1 Corinthians 4:14-15

I do not write these things to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children.15 For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

What you need is a father/family NOT another babysitter.

Romans 16:13

Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord; also his mother, who has been a mother to me as well.

Mark 3:34

And looking about at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers!

John 19:26-27

When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!“ 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!”And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.

1 Timothy 5:1-2

Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.

1 Corinthians 4:16-17

I urge you, then, be imitators of me. 17 That is why I sent you Timothy, my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, to remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach them everywhere in every church.

Imitate me only as much as I imitate Christ

5. Don’t mistake mere talk with the power of God

1 Corinthians 4:18-21

Some are arrogant, as though I were not coming to you. 19 But I will come to you soon, if the Lord wills, and I will find out not the talk of these arrogant people but their power. 20 For the kingdom of God does not consist in talk but in power. 21 What do you wish? Shall I come to you with a rod, or with love in a spirit of gentleness?“

“For the kingdom of God does not consist in talk but in power.” (1 Cor. 4:20)

Romans 1:16

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

You can’t reason your way to God, you need to come to Jesus!
