Messy Church, pt 8 – “God’s Design for Sex”

“There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of each man which cannot be satisfied by any
created thing but only by God the Creator, made known through Jesus Christ.”Blaise Pascal

Love / Sexual pleasure

Identity, Value, and Happiness

“We are witnessing a massive social experiment that will, in the end, increase the very unhappiness it is attempting to remedy.”Juli Slattery

1. What does my view of sexuality have to do with God and His Kingdom?

1 Corinthians 6:9-11

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

What was true of you then is NOT true of you now;

What is true of you now was NOT true of you then.

These are people God loves!

“such were some of you.”

1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

“But you were washed.

Matthew 5:8

Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.

1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

2. What is my body meant for?

1 Corinthians 6:12-14

“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything. 13 “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power.

“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything” 13 “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food

Whenever we try to fulfill spiritual desires with physical gratification, the result will always be the same—emptiness!

3. What exactly is sex?

1 Corinthians 6:15-16

Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members ofChrist and make them members of a prostitute? Never! 16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, “The two will become one flesh.”

Genesis 2:24

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Sex was given for husband and wife:

1. To multiply and fill the earth (Gen. 1:28)

2. So we wouldn’t burn with passion (1 Cor. 7:8-9)

1 Corinthians 7:8-9

To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is good for them to remain single, as I am. 9 But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.

4. How can you be made whole?

1 Corinthians 6:17-18

But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. 18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.

“If you’re head is made of butter stay away from the fire.” – Martin Luther

“If I can just find that right person, then I will be fulfilled.”

“Once I get married then I will be happy, and my problems with lust will go away.”

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
