Our Adoption From Slaves To Sons | Walking Free, Part 8
June 11, 2023 / Crosstown Alliance ChurchWalking Free, pt 8 – “Our Adoption From Slaves to Sons”
Galatians 4:1-7
I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no different from a slave, though he is the ownerof everything, 2 but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by his father. 3 In thesame way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles of theworld. 4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, bornunder the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption assons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying,“Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir throughGod.
Two key questions from this passage:
1. What is adoption?
2. How do we live out our adoption as children of God?
1. What is adoption?
He is our Father.
We are His children.
The moment we are declared “not guilty” we go from the courtroom to the living room.
Big Idea:
God sent his son to make you a son of God.
Christians operate from a position of adoption, not slavery.
Galatians 4:3
In the same way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles of the world.
Galatians 4:4
but when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law,“
But when the right time came,” (Gal. 4:4, NLT)
Theologically – The Law had done its part
Culturally – Greek language was wide spread.
Politically – Rome was at the height of its reign.
“God sent forth his Son”
Fully man
Fully God
“born of woman, born under the law”
God sends his Son to make you a son of God!
2. How do we live out our adoption as children of God?
God gave us adoption through the work of the Son.
God sent The Spirit to confirm we are sons.
Galatians 4:6-7
And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba!Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.
The Father administers our adoption.
The Son accomplishes our adoption.
The Holy Spirit applies/affirms our adoption.
“Abba” – Daddy
The Holy Spirit transforms our orphan tendencies into a confident trust that only comes from knowing a Father in Heaven.
