Surrender To The True King | The Incredible Life of King David, Part 3

Envy/jealousy – When others have what we want.

[do a reveal] King Saul’s fall King David rise

How do we respond when other people are blessed?

1. Saul’s Envy

1 Samuel 18:6-9

As they were coming home, when David returned from striking down the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with songs of joy, and with musical instruments. 7 And the women sang to one another as they celebrated,

Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands.”

8 And Saul was very angry, and this saying displeased him. He said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed thousands, and what more can he have but the kingdom?” 9 And Saul eyed David from that day on.

When you find your identity in success, other people’s success becomes a threat to you.

Saul’s Murder Attempts:

Saul chucks a spear at David twice and misses (18:10-11)

Saul gives his Daughter, Michal, for a price of 100 Philistine foreskins. David brings 200 (18:20-29).

Saul sends servants to kill David. Jonathan talks him out of it. (19:1-7) Saul tries the spear chucking thing again. Misses again. (19:8-10)

Saul sends his messengers to kill David. Michal helps him escape. (19:11-17)

Saul chases David to Ramah to kill him. The Spirit of God overcomes Saul. (19:18-24)

Saul demands David be brought to him and chucks a spear at his son, Jonathan. Jonathan helps David escape. (20:30-42)

Could there be a little Saul in you?

1 Samuel 19:22-24

Then he himself went to Ramah and came to the great well that is in Secu. And he asked, “Where are Samuel and David?” And one said, “Behold, they are at Naioth in Ramah.” 23 And he went there to Naioth in Ramah. And the Spirit of God came upon him also, and as he went he prophesied until he came to Naioth in Ramah. 24 And he too stripped off his clothes, and he too prophesied before Samuel and lay naked all that day and all that night. Thus it is said, “Is Saul also among the prophets?

Envy, jealousy, and pride have a way of reversing God’s blessing in your life.

2. Jonathon’s Humility

1 Samuel 18:1-4

As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 2 And Saul took him that day and would not let him return to his father’s house. 3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. 4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt.

Jonathon surrenders his rights to God’s true king

Will we?

Will we respond like Saul or Jonathon?

Matthew 16:25

“For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”
