Worship | Made For More, Part 1

August 6, 2023   /   Crosstown Alliance Church

We settle for less, when we were made for more.

Matt 22:37-38,  Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.”

Worship, is really about worth-ship.

Romans 1:18-25

18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.

24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshipped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

Worship what is worthy.

Gen 1:26-28

26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

28 God blessed them…

If the enemy can’t convince us that the lie is true, he will try to convince us that we can live by both the truth and a lie, which is still a lie.

Worship is not a song or a service, it is a way of life.

“if worship is just one thing we do everything becomes mundane, if worship IS the one thing we do, everything takes on significance.”

Isaiah 43:7- everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.

Is worship a thing you do or the thing you do.

Next steps

#1- In the Spirit

John 4:23-24

23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.

#2- In truth

17:17 Jesus says, “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.”

Enduring Word- says of worshipping in the Spirit and in truth

“Both are necessary for God-honoring worship. Spirit without truth leads to a shallow, overly emotional experience that could be compared to a high. As soon as the emotion is over, when the fervor cools, the worship ends. Truth without spirit can result in a dry, passionless encounter that can easily lead to a form of joyless legalism. The best combination of both aspects of worship results in a joyous appreciation of God informed by Scripture. The more we know about God, the more we appreciate Him. The more we appreciate, the deeper our worship. The deeper our worship, the more God is glorified.”

#3- Requires sacrifice

Romans 12:1

12 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

D.L. Moody – “The problem with a living sacrifice is that it keeps crawling off the altar.”
