The House

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

Hearing the right words is not the point.

Hearing + doing = wise

Hearing + doing = life

Hearing + not doing = foolish

Hearing + not doing = ruin

Body

House component = walls, windows, and doors

Function = the visible, physical parts of the house

Romans 12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

Mind

House component = study, office, or just a quiet place

Function = thoughts, logic, beliefs, worldview

Heart

GK = kardia

House component = living room

Function = desires, emotions, affections, intentions

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

Soul

House component = the immaterial part of the house

Function = your identity or your life, your being

Spirit

House component = the wiring (it’s unseen but produces power)

Function = God-awareness, relationship with God, connection to God

The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

Romans 8:16

Flesh

GK = sarx

House component = clutter, mold, decay, attic, basement

Function = the old self, selfishness, sin nature

Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.
