Who Am I? (Psalm 139)

The psalm is divided up into paragraphs of verses each.

Who is the presumed author of Psalm 139?

SECTION 1

In the first section/paragraph, the psalmist asks the question: How well does know ?

V. 1 – The Hebrew word for “searched” means “to dig”.

V. 2 – God understands and knows me in my conscious life.

V. 3 – God knows you inside and out.

SECTION 2

In the second section/paragraph, the psalmist asks the question: How is God to me?

V. 7 – Lord, can I get away from you?

V. 8 – Nothing can separate us from the reality of God’s presence.

V. 9-10 – God can be found everywhere! (make note of what “wings of the dawn” means)

V. 11-12 – Even the darkness cannot hide us from God’s presence.

SECTION 3

In the third section/paragraph, the psalmist asks the question: How do we know all of this is ?

V. 13-14a – The design of our bodies proves Someone else is running our lives.

V. 14b-15a – What is the frame the psalmist talks about?

V. 15 – In Hebrew, the phrase “woven together” is one word. It is like our word, .

V. 16a – The word in Hebrew for “unformed body” is “ up substance”. (This verse is often used when addressing the moral issue of abortion)

V. 16 – The psalmist is impressed not only by the argument of design, but also the evidence of (also called pre-destination).

In the fourth section/paragraph, the psalmist asks the question: Lord, why don’t you address the problem of the ?

V. 19 – WHOA! A big, abrupt turn in tone! Why do you think this happens?

V. 23-24 – “Lord, I don’t understand your ways or the problem of evil and my answers aren’t probably the best answers, so lead me to the truth.”
