Wk3: A Place of Worship
(John 4:20–24) So tell me, why is it that you Jews insist that Jerusalem is the only place of worship, while we Samaritans claim it is here at Mount Gerizim, where our ancestors worshiped?” 21 Jesus replied, “Believe me, dear woman, the time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans know very little about the one you worship, while we Jews know all about him, for salvation comes through the Jews. 23 But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. 24 For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”
Like Abraham…
√ True worshipers God, even when that obedience costs them something they value.
(Genesis 22:5) He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.”
Like Hannah…
√ True worshipers give their and their to God.
(1 Samuel 1:27–28) I asked the Lord to give me this boy, and he has granted my request. 28 Now I am giving him to the Lord, and he will belong to the Lord his whole life.” And they worshiped the Lord there.
Like Paul…
√ True worshipers keep their through seasons of hardship and suffering.
(2 Timothy 4:6–7) For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
Like Jacob…
√ True worshipers don’t let their fade, but worship until their dying day.
(Hebrews 11:21) By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph’s sons, and worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.
Like Job…
√ True worshippers worship God in the days and the .
(Job 1:20–21) Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshiped. 21 And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.”
Psalm 95, The Venite—“Come…”
Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. 2 Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. 3 For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods. 4 In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. 5 The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. 6 Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; 7 for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, as you did that day at Massah in the desert, 9 where your fathers tested and tried me, though they had seen what I did. 10 For forty years I was angry with that generation; I said, “They are a people whose hearts go astray, and they have not known my ways.” 11 So I declared on oath in my anger, “They shall never enter my rest.”
Worship is the act of ascribing ultimate value to something in a way that engages your whole person and transforms your entire life.(MULTILINE)
For worship to transform your life, three things are necessary…
√
(Jeremiah 9:23–24) This is what the Lord says: “Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom, or the powerful boast in their power, or the rich boast in their riches. 24 But those who wish to boast should boast in this alone: that they truly know me and understand that I am the Lord who demonstrates unfailing love and who brings justice and righteousness to the earth, and that I delight in these things. I, the Lord, have spoken!(MULTILINE)
√
(Matthew 15:8–9) “ ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 9 They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.’”(MULTILINE)
√
(Psalm 22:22) I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:
(Matthew 18:20) For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.”(MULTILINE)
