Week 06: Hearing God’s Voice

(1 Kings 19:9-13) And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 10 He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.” 11 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

4 Filters to Know God’s Voice

Is it consistent with ?

(Psalm 19:7-9) The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. 8  The precepts of the Lord are right,  giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. 9  The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous.

(Psalm 115:109) Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.

(2 Timothy 3:16) All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness …

Does it draw me closer to ?

(John 3:17) For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

(Romans 8:1 NLT) So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.

Seek out counsel.

(Proverbs 12:15) The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.

(1 Corinthians 14:33 NKJV) For God is not the author of confusion but of peace…

3 Steps to Hear God’s voice

1. to God every day.

(John 10:4 MSG) When he gets them all out, he leads them and they follow because they are familiar with his voice.

(1 Kings 19:11) The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”

(Psalm 37:23) The LORD directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.

2. things that oppose God.

(John 10:5 MSG) They won’t follow a stranger’s voice but will scatter because they aren’t used to the sound of it.

3. toward what God has spoken.

(John 10:27) My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
