Savior, Christ, Lord

The Birth of Jesus

(Luke 2:1–7 ESV)1 In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 And all went to be registered, each to his own town. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. 6 And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

The Birth Announcement

(Luke 2:8–11 ESV)8 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

A Savior, who is Christ the Lord

A Savior…

(Matthew 1:21 ESV)21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

(Acts 4:12 ESV)12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Who is Christ…

Christos is the Greek form of the Hebrew masiah (Messiah). Both words mean anointed. In the Old Testament era there were three anointed offices in which God chose and anointed men to serve—prophet, priest, and king. All three offices foreshadowed the redemptive work Jesus would do in our lives. Jesus fulfills them all!

Our Prophet

(John 8:12 ESV)12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

(Hebrews 1:1–2 ESV)1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son…

Our Priest

(Hebrews 4:14–16 ESV) 14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Our King

(Revelation 19:16 ESV) 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.

(Matthew 28:18 ESV) 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

…The Lord

(Romans 10:9 ESV)9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

The Two-Fold Purpose Announced

(Luke 2:13–14 ESV)13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

—Glory to God

—Peace for you and me.

1.  Peace with God

(Romans 5:1 ESV) 1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

2. Peace with one another.

(Romans 14:19 ESV) 19 So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.

3. Peace in and with ourselves.

(Isaiah 26:3 NLT) 3 You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!
