(Psalm 24:3–6) Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? 4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart…
(Isaiah 1:16) Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes; cease to do evil.
(2 Timothy 2:21) Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work.
(John 15:3-7) Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you… 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
What happens when a Christian sins?
1. Our legal standing before God remains unchanged.
2. Our fellowship with God is disrupted.
3. We suffer setback or damage to some degree.
The Remedy: The Cleansing of God’s Forgiveness
1. Forgiveness for our daily sins.
(John 13:10) Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.”
(1 John 1:8) If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
2. Forgiveness when we miss the miss the mark.
Hamartia
(1 John 1:9) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
3. Forgiveness and restoration when we willfully transgress.
(Psalm 51:1–4) Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.
(Psalm 51:6–9) Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice. Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.
(Psalm 51:10–12) Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.
4. Forgiveness, healing and freedom from our iniquities.
(Isaiah 53:5) But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.
1. Ask the Lord to shine his light and help you see.
2. Confess and take full responsibility
3. Ask for and believe you receive forgiveness (1 John 1:9)
4. Repent—turn away from the sin, get help
5. Ask God to help (Psalm 51—create a pure heart, renew a steadfast spirit, help you realize truth in your inner being)
6. Resist the devil and reject his condemnation.
7. Start over again (always in community with others)
