5-Day Devotional: Serving in God’s Mission
January 26, 2025 / First Baptist Church ElginDay 1: True Transformation
Summary: True transformation involves being shaped into the image of Christ, who came to serve. As believers, we are called to look more like Jesus each day, adopting His mindset of selfless service.
Read:
- Mark 10:35-45
- Philippians 2:5-8
Background: Jesus’ life exemplified service. When James and John requested positions of prominence, Jesus redirected their focus to humility and service, emphasizing that He came not to be served but to serve and give His life as a ransom for many.
Key Words:
- Transformation: The process of becoming more Christlike (2 Corinthians 3:18).
- Service: A Christ-centered response to the gospel.
- Humility: Following Christ’s example of putting others first.
Theological Truths: “The Son of God became a servant to reconcile us to the Father. How then can we refuse to serve others in His name?” —John Calvin
Questions for Reflection:
- How does Jesus’ example of serving challenge your view of service?
- What areas of your life need transformation to reflect Christ’s humility?
- How can serving others help shape you into the image of Christ?
Application: Identify one practical way to serve someone in your family or community today.
Day 2: Empowered to Serve
Summary: God supplies and empowers us to serve in His mission. Through the Holy Spirit, we receive the strength and wisdom necessary to accomplish His work.
Read:
- John 15:5
- Acts 1:8
Background: Jesus taught that He is the vine, and we are the branches. Apart from Him, we can do nothing. After His ascension, He promised the Holy Spirit to empower His disciples to carry His mission to the ends of the earth.
Key Words:
- Empowerment: The Holy Spirit’s role in equipping believers for service.
- Vine and branches: The connection necessary for spiritual fruitfulness.
- Witness: Testifying to God’s work in our lives.
Theological Truths: “Without the Spirit of God, we can do nothing. We are as ships without wind. We are useless.” —Charles Spurgeon
Questions for Reflection:
- What does it mean for Jesus to be your source as you serve?
- How have you experienced the Holy Spirit’s empowerment in your life?
- What happens when we try to serve in our own strength?
Application: Spend time in prayer, asking God to fill you with His Spirit and guide you in serving others this week.
Day 3: Serving in the Body of Christ
Summary: Serving in the church is essential for its growth and unity. Each believer has a unique role to play in the body of Christ.
Read:
- Ephesians 4:11-16
- Romans 12:4-8
Background: The church is described as one body with many parts, working together to grow into maturity in Christ. Every believer’s contribution is vital to its health and mission.
Key Words:
- Unity: The goal of a functioning body of Christ.
- Maturity: Growing in faith and love as a community.

- What happens when a part of the body doesn’t fulfill its role?
Application: Consider joining or committing to a ministry within your church that aligns with your gifts.
Day 4: Serving Starts Here

Questions for Reflection:
- How does the principle of starting where you are apply to your life?
- What opportunities to serve in your church or community might you be overlooking?
- How can serving locally prepare you for greater ministry?
Application: Find one way to serve in your church or community this week. Start small but stay consistent.

Read:
- 2 Corinthians 5:18-20
- Matthew 25:35-40

Key Words:
- Ambassadors: Representing Christ in our words and actions.
- Reconciliation: God’s mission to restore relationships.
- Compassion: Reflecting Christ’s care for the least of these.
Theological Truths: “God’s work of reconciliation is both our mission and our joy. As we serve others, we display the gospel in action.” —Martin Luther
Questions for Reflection:
- How has serving others brought you joy and deepened your faith?
- How does serving create opportunities for sharing the gospel?
- What steps can you take to embrace a lifestyle of joyful service?
Application: Look for someone in need this week and serve them with Christ’s love, expecting nothing in return. Let your actions be a testimony to God’s goodness.
