The Countercultural Good News (Galatians 1:1-10)

1. No Peace Without (Galatians 1:2-4) Grace is the good news (v.4)

a. – Jesus gave himself for our sin (v.4a). Substitutionary atonement.

b. To rescue us from this present evil age (V.4b). A rescue that goes beyond temporary relief to eternal transformation.

c. According to God’s will (V.4c). It was God’s will from the beginning. (2 Peter 3:9)

V.5 spontaneous praise is the logical response to the good news

2. The Galatian Problem was bad math: V.6 Jesus + works=justification. The real equation is Jesus + nothing = everything. Saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.”

Serious consequences: V.8-9 Anathemacut off from God.

Application Point 1: One True North—The Gospel

Modern Counterfeit Gospels: in a post Christian culture

The Gospel of Moral Therapeutic Deism: This is like a feel-good, make-your-own-god gospel.

The Gospel of Comfort: A prosperity gospel that promises an easy, trouble-free life.

The Gospel of Political Ideology: This is the idea that politics will save us, or a leader is our ultimate hope.

The Gospel of Tolerance: This version of the gospel says all beliefs and lifestyles are equally valid.

Takeaway: Do my beliefs hold fast to the unchanging truth of Christ, our true north?

Application Point 2: Truth is Absolute, and We Are Its Ambassadors

The Gospel Is Our Yardstick: Jesus in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.”

Real Love Means Speaking Truth in Love V.10:

Courage to Speak: Sharing the gospel truth takes courage because it won’t always be popular.

Receive Truth with Humility: Be open to correction.

The Takeaway: Without a foundation in absolute truth, we lose our bearings. But when we anchor our lives to the truth of the gospel, we find direction, purpose, and the strength to live with integrity and love.

Grow Group Questions:

  1. Paul writes very bluntly and urgently here. What does this tell us about the importance of the purity of the gospel?
  2. What are some ways that the gospel message might be subtly altered or distorted in today’s culture? How can these seemingly small changes lead to a completely different understanding of the gospel?
  3. Satan uses confusion and deception to distort the gospel. Can you identify any examples where you have seen this in your own experiences or in the broader Christian community?
  4. Many people today want to make the gospel more culturally relevant by adapting its message to fit modern values and norms. How do we balance the need to communicate the gospel in ways that are understandable and relevant while maintaining its purity and truth? Where do we draw the line?
  5. What are some practical steps we can take to discern and guard against false gospels in our own lives and in the teachings we encounter?

Notes: For further study. If you want to know dates and times. Paul’s ministry was soon after Jesus’ resurrection. https://www.blueletterbible.org/study/paul/timeline.cfm
