Others (Galatians 6:1-18)

Big Idea: Living upwardly then outwardly to others results in our greatest joy and good.

V.1 Others centered living means working toward restoration into relationship.

V.2 John 13- The law of Christ is literally to help another in their burden.

V.3 The opposite of the upward and outward life is the inward self-focused, self-serving life that ultimately leads to loneliness and disappointment.

V.4-5 Happiness Lab at yale: Comparison is the thief of joy.

V.6 Generosity as another way to live outwardly.

V.7-10Laws of the (spiritual) harvest

1. V.8 Reap according to what you sow

2. You reap more than you sow (eternal)

3. V.9 Reap later than you sow A farmer waits for the harvest (don’t grow weary)

V.11-16 Concluding remarks

Application:

OTHERS is an acronym we can use to remember our calling.

O – Ontology – the study of the nature of human existence and what gives life meaning.

Serving others opens doors to discover a deeper sense of purpose. Ephesians 2:10 says it is why were created and only by living according to our design will we find meaning and satisfaction.

T – Transformation – Serving others transforms our character and perspective. Jesus, the word made flesh, modeled it for our good (John 13:14-15). Research: volunteering and acts of kindness reshape our mindset.

H – Health – Yale Happiness lab: people who serve experience lower rates of depression, anxiety and improved physical health (even mortality). Proverbs 11:25 “Whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” Isaiah 58:10 If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday.

E – Encourages Community – Serving creates deeper connections and strengthens relationships. Galatians 5:13 “serve one another humbly in love,” and when we do, we build bonds that increase our sense of belonging and reduce isolation.

R – Reflects God’s Love – It’s a tangible way to reflect God’s love (John 13:35). Serving tills the soil of hard hearts that reveals Christ’s love and hope in a world often desperate for both.

S – Strengthens Growth – It’s in serving others that we experience the joy of living out our faith, becoming “doers of the word” (James 1:22).

The motivation? Worship. Colossians 3:23-24 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward.

Challenge: start serving. Passions indicate where, gifts indicate what to do in that area.

Grow Group Questions:

Note: look for an opportunity to serve as a small group each quarter. Maybe schedule a day to serve with Samaritan’s Purse. See the back page for ideas.

  1. What are obstacles to “bearing one another’s burdens” (6:2) in your daily life? Is there something we can do personally or in our small group?
  2. How does a focus on “others” change our view of what’s truly important in life? Share a personal story where helping others brought unexpected joy or growth.
  3. Reflect on the acronym OTHERS. Which letter resonates most with you? How might you apply this principle in your life this week to build stronger relationships?
  4. In what areas do you tend to compare yourself to others? Why is it hard to celebrate the successes of others? How can you shift your focus to celebrating the successes of others rather than your own?

Notes: Key Findings from Dr. Laurie Santos’ happiness lab course at Yale: The core message from Santos’s research is that many of our intuitions about what will make us happy are wrong. Her course is called psychology and the good life, and it lines up incredibly well with Jesus’ teachings!

  • Money has surprisingly little impact on happiness once basic needs are met (around $75,000/year in the US). Additional income beyond this threshold shows diminishing returns for well-being
  • Social connection is one of the strongest predictors of happiness:
    • People with strong social relationships are significantly happier
  • Time affluence matters more than monetary affluence:
    • People who prioritize time over money report greater life satisfaction

Present-moment awareness/mindfulness correlates with higher well-being. Mind wandering is a problem. Gets into the “what if’s, what could be” dreaming instead of living now.

A 2013 study in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin found that people who were self-focused tended to have higher levels of depression and anxiety. People who engage in prosocial behaviors like helping others report higher levels of happiness and life satisfaction. A 2010 review in Psychological Bulletin concluded that “doing good” for others is strongly associated with well-being and health benefits. Generous, altruistic behavior triggers the reward centers in the brain and produces positive emotions. Empirical evidence strongly supports the biblical principle that self-focused, unethical behavior leads to negative personal and societal consequences, while outward-focused, virtuous behavior yields positive outcomes.
