Diving into Friendship with God

John 15:12-15

 

Who is God?
  • God is Creator, Savior, Lord, King, Father, Teacher, Provider, Protector, Rock, Fortress, the Good Shepherd, Lamb of God and Lion of Judah.
  • God is not less than these, but He is also more than these.
  • God is also a .
The word ‘friend’ (philos) describes someone with whom you have a close bond of mutual .

Matthew 11:19 (ESV) – “The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.”
John 15:12–15 (ESV) – “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.”
  • As Christians we are friends of God.
  • We are not equals.
  • We are not buddies.
  • We are friends…we are intended to have a close bond of mutual affection with Him.

James 4:4 (ESV) – You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
  • We cannot be friends with the world and a friend of God at the same time.
  • Why? Because the world’s invitations are in direct opposition to God’s commands.

What kind of friend is God?

  • Love is working for the good of another person, even (or especially) when it costs you something.
  • Loving someone isn’t the same as being nice to them.
  • Loving someone means being good to them.
