How to Face Down Your Fears
Proverbs
We are all afraid of something.
-
How do we face down those fears?
-
How do we manage them, move past them?
-
How do we conquer them?
What does ungodly fear look like?
-
Proverbs 28:1 (ESV) – The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion.
-
Proverbs 29:25 (ESV) – The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is safe.
-
We live at the mercy of whatever we are afraid of.
What is the opposite of ungodly fear? The fear of the Lord.
-
Proverbs 1:7 (ESV) – The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
-
Fearing the Lord means two different things at the same time:
-
: An awareness of God’s perfect purity and power that makes us genuinely afraid to disobey Him.
-
: An awareness of God’s perfect love and grace that makes us genuinely want to love, revere, trust, worship, obey and serve Him.
-
-
Isaiah 8:11–13 (ESV) – For the LORD spoke thus to me with his strong hand upon me, and warned me not to walk in the way of this people, saying: “Do not call conspiracy all that this people calls conspiracy, and do not fear what they fear, nor be in dread. But the LORD of hosts, him you shall honor as holy. Let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.
-
Luke 12:4–7 (ESV) – “I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him! Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.
-
Philippians 2:12–13 (ESV) -Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
-
Others: Acts 9:31, 2 Cor 5:10-11; 7:11, 1 Peter 1:17.
What happens when we fear the Lord?
-
He gives us and satisfaction and ultimate safety: Proverbs 14:27 (ESV) – The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death.
-
He gives us : Psalm 23:4 (ESV) – Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
-
He shows : Psalm 103:13 (ESV) – As a father shows compassion to his children, so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear him.
-
He gives us : Psalm 118:6 (ESV) – The LORD is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?
What does it look like to fear the Lord? How do we do it?
-
to it: Proverbs 18:10 (ESV) – The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.
-
Find who fear the Lord: Psalm 119:63 (ESV) – I am a companion of all who fear you, of those who keep your precepts.
-
Him: Psalm 22:23 (ESV) – You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him, and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!
-
Him: Ecclesiastes 12:13–14 (ESV) – The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.
-
Be : Luke 12:32–34 (ESV) – “Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
-
Become His : Romans 8:15 (ESV) – For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
A blessing for us all:
-
1 Chronicles 28:20 (NLT) – Then David continued, “Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Don’t be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. He will see to it that all the work related to the Temple of the LORD is finished correctly.
