01 – Second Samuel Series Overview

October 12, 2023   /   Harvest Chapel Orange County

The book of Second Samuel presents the events of David’s monarchy, which followed the reign of Saul, Israel’s first king.

Saul was a man of great rebellion and sin. And even though David was certainly a great king for the nation of Israel, what him most important in a believer’s life, is that he was an ancestor of Jesus:

Matthew 1:1

1 Authorship and Timing

The books of First and Second Samuel appeared as one book in the original Hebrew Scriptures. It wasn’t until the Greek version of the Old Testament, called the Septuagint was developed, that the one book was divided into two.

As with First Samuel, the identity of the author is unknown, but it based upon other Scriptures, it’s believed the books were compiled from writings of the prophets Gad and Nathan:

1 Chronicles 29:29

Since Second Samuel chronicles David’s reign from 1011 to 971BC, it is believed the book was written at some point after 960 BC.

2 Importance of the Book

There are several main aspects to Second Samuel:

  • The establishment of David’s monarchy.
  • Expansion of Israel’s territory under David.
  • The expansion, however, was far more than territorial. But it shows the establishment of the Davidic Covenant:

2 Samuel 7:16

3 Context

Much as seen in First Samuel, the second volume continues to show the contrasts between Saul and David, the first and second kings of Israel.

Yet despite clearly showing those contrasts, it doesn’t present David in only a good light, but rather shows his flaws and even his sins.

However, while Saul never repented, David did. He showed his desire was for fellowship with the Lord.

The book will also show how David grew through his many hardships, equipping him to become an excellent ruler for the nation.

4 Practical Application

The book presents a great example to believers of what a life of surrender to the Lord should look like.

The book shows how even solid believers will fall, if they do not maintain a close relationship with the Lord.

It also shows the importance, especially for men, to be true spiritual leaders in the home. David’s failure in that regard led to great dysfunction, and sin amongst his children. Those problems would eventually threaten his life and monarchy.

Second Samuel also presents the consequences of sin, such as David’s sin with Bathsheba, and the death of the baby from their adulterous interaction.

However, it also shows the importance of confession and repentance of sin. Even though David bore the consequences of his sin, He received God’s forgiveness, restoration, and further blessings.

5 Outline and Summary

  • The final portion of the book (chapters 21-24) is a non-chronological accounting of various details from David’s reign as king.
