CHRIST AUTHORITY

Mark 1:21-28

Mark 1

INTRODUCTION:

Matthew 28:18 (NIV)Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

TEXT:

Mark 1:21-28 (NIV) 21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out,24 “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”

25 “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!”26 The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.

27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.”28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.

Highlights:

THREE WAYS MARK SHOW THAT JESUS HAS ALL AUTHORITHY:

1.

Mark 1:21 (NIV) They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.

Matthew 11:23-24 (NIV), And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades. For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”

The more that is revealed to you, the more before God you are on judgment day.

Mark 1:22 (NIV)The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.

Hebrews 4:12 (NIV) For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

James 1:23-24 (NIV)Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

Hebrews 4:13 (NIV) 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Isaiah 55:11 (NIV)So is my word that goes out from my mouth:  It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desireand achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

2.

Mark 1:23-24 (NIV)Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out,24 “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”

v. 23cried out.

2 Timothy 1:7 (NLT)For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.

The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis, ”There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. [Or the demons] One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them.  They themselves are equally pleased with both errors and hail a materialist or a magician with the same delight.”

Notice a couple things when it comes to Jesus and the demons.

·        The demons always Jesus.

v.24What do you want with us…

v.24Have you come here to destroy us?

1 John 3:8 (NIV)The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.

Mark 3: 11-12 (NIV) Whenever the impure spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.”12 But he gave them strict orders not to tell others about him.

Mark 5:6-8 (NIV) When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him.He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!”For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”

·        Demons fear Jesus.

James 2:19 (NIV)You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.

v. 24Have you come to destroy us?

v. 24Jesus of Nazareth…. You are the Holy One of God.

3.

Mark 1:25 (NIV) “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!”

Mark 1:26-27 (NIV)The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.  27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.”

Colossians 2:13-15 (NIV) When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made youalive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

CONCLUSION:

1 John 4:4 (NKJV)Greater is He who is in you, than he who is in the world.

The thing for you to do is live your life to Jesus Christ’s authority.
