RADICAL DISCIPLES Pt. 2

Mark 1:14-20

Mark 1

INTRODUCTION:

Exodus 32:1-6 (NIV) When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, “Come, make us godswho will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.”

Aaron answered them, “Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.”So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, “These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”

When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, “Tomorrow there will be a festival to the Lord.”So the next day the people rose early and sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offerings. Afterward they sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt. They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and have said, ‘These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.’

FROM JOHN STOTT’S BOOK, THE RADICAL DISCIPLE, He wrote this book on his death bed in 2011…“Our common way of avoiding radical discipleship is to be selective; choosing those areas in which commitment suits us and staying away from those areas in which it will be costly. But because Jesus is Lord, we have no right to pick and choose the areas in which we will submit to his authority.” (Page 17). “God wants his people to become like Christ, for Christlikeness is the will of God for the people of God.” (Page 32)

TEXT:

Mark 1:14-20 (NIV) 14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God.15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!

16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”18 At once they left their nets and followed him.

19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets.20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

FOUR THINGS ABOUT RADICAL DISCIPLES:

1. THEY BELIEVE

They Believe in the .

Mark 1:14-15 (NIV) 14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God.15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”

What is the Gospel?

”The Gospel is the Good News that Jesus Christ perfectly fulfilled the law, sacrificially died for our sins, and physically rose from the dead to reconcile His people to a Holy God through repentance of sin and faith in Him.”

Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV)For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.

2. THEY REPENT

They Repent of their .

Mark 1:15 (NIV) “…The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”

Repentance is a critical aspect of our walk with God.

·        Repentance means I have a change of mind—My MINDSET changes.

Romans 6:1-14 (NIV)What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?

·        The Promiseis a life by grace.

Romans 6:1-2 (NIV)Shall we go on sinning… By no means! We are those who have died to sin…

·        As Christ follower we have been united with Christ in His death!

Romans 6:3-4 (NIV) Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

·        As Christ Followers we embrace the newness of life we have in Christ.

Romans 6:5 (NIV) For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.

·        As Christ Followers we are no longer slaves to Sin!

Romans 6:6-7 (NIV) For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin—because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.

·        As Christ Followers we now live for God!  By the power of the Holy Spirit at work in us!

Romans 6:8-10 (NIV) Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him.10 The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.

·        As a Christ follower we must count ourselves to Sin!

Romans 6:11-14 (NIV) 11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.14 For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.

Romans 8:13 (NIV)For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.

They follow the Savior He wants them to go.

John 1:36 (NIV)When he [John the Baptist] saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”

Mark 1:17 (NIV) “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”

Mark 1:17b (NIV) Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”  (NKJV)”I will make you become fishers of men.”

Matthew 10:7-8 (NIV)As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.

Luke 4:18-19 (NIV)“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.  He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisonersand recovery of sight for the blind,to set the oppressed free,to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

What is His call like?

·        It’s .

4.  THEY FISH

They Fish for Souls.

If you’re not , you’re not Jesus!

Mark 1:17 (NIV) “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” (NKJV) ”Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”

Following Jesus to catching people for God.

2 Timothy 2:25-26 (NIV) 25 Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth,26 and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.

CONCLUSION:

A net is just a bunch of sewn together.

John 15:5 (NIV)Apart from Me, you can do nothing.
