TRANSFORMATION—FROM LEPROSY TO LIFE pt.1

Mark 1:40-45

Mark 1

INTRODUCTION:

TEXT:

Mark 1:40-45 (NIV) 40 A man with leprosycame to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”

41 Jesus was indignant. He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!”42 Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.

43 Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning:44 “See that you don’t tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”45 Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.

FOUR THINGS WE MUST SEE:  (((Two today, the last two next week…)))

1. A DISTRESSED CONDITION

Mark 1:40 (NIV) 40 A man with leprosycame to him [Jesus]

Luke 5:12 (NIV)a man came along who was covered with leprosy.

Leviticus 13:45-46 (NIV)“Anyone with such a defiling disease must wear torn clothes, let their hair be unkempt, cover the lower part of their face and cry out, ‘Unclean! Unclean!’46 As long as they have the disease they remain unclean. They must live alone; they must live outside the camp.”

*Leprosy in the Bible is a picture of sin.

Ephesians 2:1 (NIV)As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins…

Isaiah 59:2 (NIV)But your iniquities have separatedyou from your God;your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear.

Psalm 51:5 (NIV)Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.

2. A SURE CONVICTION

Mark 1:40b (NIV) 40 A man with leprosycame to him[Jesus]and begged him on his knees

Mark 1:40c (NIV) “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”

Luke 4:12b (NIV)When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”

Matthew 8:2 (NKJV)A leper came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”

*How did the leper come to Jesus? It says that he came in a posture of humility and worship.

2 Kings 5:5-7 (NIV) “By all means, go,” the king of Aram replied. “I will send a letter to the king of Israel.” So Naaman left, taking with him ten talentsof silver, six thousand shekels of gold and ten sets of clothing. The letter that he took to the king of Israel read: “With this letter I am sending my servant Naaman to you so that you may cure him of his leprosy.”

As soon as the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his robes and said, “Am I God? Can I kill and bring back to life? Why does this fellow send someone to me to be cured of his leprosy? See how he is trying to pick a quarrel with me!”

2 Peter 3:9 (NIV)The Lord is not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

*If you’re willing to come to Jesus, He is willing to save you.

John 12:25 (NIV)Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

Hebrews 11:6 (NKJV)But without faith, it is impossible to please Him, for He who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him.
