CHRISTIANS IN CONFLICT
1 Corinthians 6:1-11
INTRODUCTION:
Acts 18
Romans 13
1 Corinthians 6
1 Corinthians 6:1 (NLT) When one of you has a dispute with another believer, how dare you file a lawsuit and ask a secular court to decide the matter instead of taking it to other believers!
1 Corinthians 5:12-13 (NIV) 12 What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? 13 God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.”
1 Corinthians 5:12 (NIV) What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside?
James 5:19-20 (NIV) My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, 20 remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.
1 Corinthians 6:6 (NIV) But, one brother takes another to court—and this in front of unbelievers!
1 Corinthians 6:1-11 (NIV) If any of you has a dispute with another, do you dare to take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the Lord’s people? 2 Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? 3 Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life! 4 Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, do you ask for a ruling from those whose way of life is scorned in the church? 5 I say this to shame you. Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers? 6 But instead, one brother takes another to court—and this in front of unbelievers!
7 The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated? 8 Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers and sisters. 9 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Background:
1 Corinthians 6:1 (NIV) If any of you has a dispute with another, do you dare to take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the Lord’s people?
THREE REASON WHY NOT TO SUE A FELLOW CHRIST FOLLOWER:
1.
1 Corinthians 6:2, 3, 9 (NIV) v. 2, ”…do you not know,” v. 3, ”Do you not know,” v.9, ”…do you know not.”
1 Corinthians 6:2 (NIV) 2 Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases?
2 Timothy 2:12 (NIV) …if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us.
Luke 19:17 (NIV) “‘Well done, my good servant!’ his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’”
1 Corinthians 6:2 (NIV) 2 Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world?
1 Corinthians 6:3 (NIV) Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life!
2 Peter 2:4 (NIV) For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them in chains of darkness to be held for judgment…
Jude 1:6 (NIV) And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling—these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.
1 Corinthians 6:5 (NIV) I say this to shame you. Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers?
1 Peter 1:22 (NIV) …love one another deeply, from the heart.
1 Corinthians 6:7 (NIV) The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?
Matthew 5:39-42 (NIV) 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
Romans 13:1 (NIV) Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.
1 Peter 2:13-14 (NIV) Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority, 14 or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right.
1 Corinthians 6:6 (NIV) But instead, one brother takes another to court—and this in front of unbelievers!
1 Corinthians 6:7b (NIV) Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?
Matthew 5:23-24 (NIV) 23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.
