CROSSING THE LINE
1 Corinthians 10:1-13
TEXT:
1 Corinthians 10:1-13 (NIV) For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. 2 They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 3 They all ate the same spiritual food 4 and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. 5 Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.
6 Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. 7 Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.” 8 We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did—and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died. 9 We should not test Christ, as some of them did—and were killed by snakes. 10 And do not grumble, as some of them did—and were killed by the destroying angel.
11 These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come. 12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
THREE PRINCIPLES WHEN IT COMES TO CROSSING THE LINE:
1.
1 Corinthians 10:1 (NIV) For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea.
1 Corinthians 10:2 (NIV) 3 They all ate the same spiritual food 4 and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.
1 Corinthians 10:3 (NIV) 3 They all ate the same spiritual food…
Psalm 78:25 (NIV) Human beings ate the bread of angels; he sent them all the food they could eat.
John 6:31-32 (NIV) Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” 32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.
John 6:33-34 (NIV) 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”
John 6:35 (NIV) 35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
1 Corinthians 10:4 (NIV) They all 4 drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.
They “all”
- Experience God’s
- Experienced God’s
- Experienced God’s
1 Corinthians 10:5 (NIV) 5 Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.
Past are no Guarantee of Future !
1 Corinthians 10:5b (NIV) …their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.
2.
1 Corinthians 10:6a (NIV) Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did.
1 Corinthians 10:11a (NIV) These things happened to them as examples…
Five lines that they crossed:
- after evil things
1 Corinthians 10:6 (NIV) Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. (NKJV) …we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted.
- into idolatry
- Corinthians 10:7 (NIV) Do not be idolaters, as
some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.”
- in immorality
1 Corinthians 10:8 (NIV) We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did—and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.
Numbers 25,
- God’s provision
1 Corinthians 10:9 (NIV) We should not test Christ, as some of them did—and were killed by snakes.
Numbers 21
- against Godly leadership
1 Corinthians 10:10 (NIV) 10 And do not grumble, as some of them did—and were killed by the destroying angel.
Numbers 16
Numbers 14:2 (NIV) All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, “If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this wilderness!
Numbers 14:36 (NIV) So the men Moses had sent to explore the land, who returned and made the whole community grumble against him by spreading a bad report about it…
Numbers 16:41 (NIV) The next day the whole Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. “You have killed the Lord’s people,” they said.
Numbers 16:31-33 (NIV) 31 As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart 32 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households, and all those associated with Korah, together with their possessions. 33 They went down alive into the realm of the dead, with everything they owned; the earth closed over them, and they perished and were gone from the community.
3. F
1 Corinthians 10:11-12 (NIV) 11 These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come. 12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!
Micah 3:11 (NIV) Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests teach for a price, and her prophets tell fortunes for money. Yet they look for the Lord’s support and say, “Is not the Lord among us? No disaster will come upon us.”
1 Corinthians 10:12 (NIV) 12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!
1 Corinthians 10:13 (NIV) 13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
