TEXT:

1 Corinthians 15:35-49 (NIV) 35 But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?”36 How foolish! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies.37 When you sow, you do not plant the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or of something else.38 But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed he gives its own body.39 Not all flesh is the same: People have one kind of flesh, animals have another, birds another and fish another.40 There are also heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies; but the splendor of the heavenly bodies is one kind, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is another.41 The sun has one kind of splendor, the moon another and the stars another; and star differs from star in splendor.

42 So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable;43 it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power;44 it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.

If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.45 So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit.46 The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual.47 The first man was of the dust of the earth; the second man is of heaven.48 As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven.49 And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man, so shall we bear the image of the heavenly man.

The nature of our resurrected bodies.

TWO AREAS TO CONSIDER:

1.

Three Illustrations

·

1 Corinthians 15:36-37 (NIV)What you sow does not come to life unless it dies.  When you sow, you do not plant the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or of something else.

John 12:24 (NIV)Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.

1 Corinthians 15:38 (NIV) But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed he gives its own body.

Psalm 14:1 (NIV)The foolsays in his heart,“There is no God.”  They are corrupt, their deeds are vile;there is no one who does good.

·

1 Corinthians 15:39 (NIV) Not all flesh is the same: People have one kind of flesh, animals have another, birds another and fish another.

1 Corinthians 15:50 (NIV)“…the perishable inherit the imperishable…?”

1 Corinthians 15:38 (NIV)But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed he gives its own body.

1 Corinthians 15:39 (NIV) Not all flesh is the same: People have one kind of flesh, animals have another, birds another and fish another.

·

1 Corinthians 15:40 (NIV)There are also heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies; but the splendor of the heavenly bodies is one kind, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is another.41 The sun has one kind of splendor, the moon another and the stars another; and star differs from star in splendor.

1 Corinthians 15:41 (NIV)The sun has one kind of splendor, the moon another and the stars another; and star differs from star in splendor.

1 Corinthians 15:50 (NIV) Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.

2.

1 Corinthians 15:42-44 (NIV)So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable;43 it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power;44 it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.

1 Corinthians 15:42 (NIV)So will it be with the resurrection of the dead.

How different will those bodies be?

·        Contrasts – four of them

The first contrast, 1 Corinthians 15:42 (NIV) The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable;

2 Corinthians 4:16 (NIV) tells us, Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.

The second contrast, 1 Corinthians 15:43 (NIV) …it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory…

1 Corinthians 15:22 (NIV) teaches, For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.

1 John 3:2 (NIV) tells us so, But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him…

Philippians 3:21 (NIV) says so, [He] will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

The third contrast, 1 Corinthians 15:43b (NIV)… it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power…

The fourth contrast, 1 Corinthians 15:44 (NIV)…it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.

2 Corinthians 5:1 (NIV)For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.

2 Corinthians 5:2 (NIV)Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling.

·

1 Corinthians 15:45 (NIV)So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit.

Genesis 2:7(NIV)Then the Lord God formed a manfrom the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

v. 45, “The first man Adam became a living being”;

Romans 5:12, 17-21 (NIV) Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned… 17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!

18 Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people.19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.

20 The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more,21 so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Genesis 1:31 (NIV)God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.

1 Corinthians 15:21 (NIV)For since death came through a man [Adam], the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man [Jesus].

John 10:10 (NIV)I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

1 Corinthians 15:22 (NIV)For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.

1 Corinthians 15:23 (NIV)  But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him.

1 Corinthians 15:46-49 (NIV)46 The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual. 47 The first man was of the dust of the earth; the second man is of heaven. 48 As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven. 49 And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man, so shall webear the image of the heavenly man.
