INTRODUCTION:

1 John 4:7-10 (NIV) Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

The three members of the triune God give this great supernatural love:

Love of God: John 3:16, Romans 5:8, 2 Corinthians 13:14, 1 Thessalonians 4:9, 2 Thessalonians 3:4-5, Titus 3:4, 1 John 2:4-5, 3:1, 16-17, 4:15-16.

Love of Christ: Romans 8:38-39, Ephesians 3:14-19.

Love of the Holy Spirit: Romans 5:5, 15:31.

John 15:5 (NIV) “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

What kind of effect does God’s love have on me:

  • An commitment of one’s life completely to God. Matthew 22:37, Luke 16:13-14, 1 John 4:19
  • An love towards believers. Ephesians 1:15-16, 1 Thessalonians 4:4, 1 John 3:16-19, 4:7,11-12
  • A desire to other believers. Galatians 5:13
  • An increase in my to love, never ceasing. 1 Thessalonians 3:11-13, 4:9-10, 1 Peter 1:22-23
  • A new to keep God’s word as the of our lives. John 14:23-24, 1 John 2:3-6
  • A new understand this is by God to me to love.

1 John 4:20-21, 5:2-5

  • A resolve to in love—the life of love. Ephesians 5:1-2
  • Complete in God, no matter what the circumstances, even death, to be able to walk in love. Romans 8:28, 32-39,

1 Corinthians 13

TEXT:

1 Corinthians 13:1-13 (NIV) If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Highlights:

1 Corinthians 12:31 (NIV) Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. And yet I will show you the most excellent way.

1 Corinthians 14:1 (NIV) Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit…

Matthew 6:21 (NIV) For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

FIVE ENEMIES OF LOVE:

1.

1 Corinthians 13:5a (NIV) It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking

Luke 19:10 (NIV) For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.

2.

1 Corinthians 13:4 (NIV) Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

Romans 12:15 (NIV) Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.

3.

1 Corinthians 13:5 (NIV) It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

Psalm 103:12 (NIV) As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

1 John 1:9 (NIV) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Matthew 18:21-22 (NIV) Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.

Luke 23:34 (NIV) Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

Matthew 6:14-15 (NIV) 14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

4.

1 Corinthians 13:7-8 (NIV) It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails.

1 John 4:18 (NIV) There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

5.

1 Corinthians 13:8-12 (NIV) Love never fails.

Matthew 23:11-12 (NIV) 11 The greatest among you will be your servant. 12 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.

1 Corinthians 13:11-12 (NIV) 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

The church should be continually growing in its love toward one another, which is an absolute necessity in Christian maturity.

2 Corinthians 8:1-8, Ephesians 4:14-16, Philippians 1:3-11, 1 Thessalonians 1:2-4, 3:11-13, 4:9-10, Hebrews 13:1

CONCLUSION:

1 Corinthians 13:13 (NIV) And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love
