Biblical Terms Used to Describe the Prophet

1. Man of God

Common term for a prophet in Israel. Emphasis on holy calling, moral character and divine ministry.

Deuteronomy 33:1 ESV: This is the blessing with which Moses the man of God blessed the people of Israel before his death.

1 Samuel 9:6 ESV: But he said to him, “Behold, there is a man of God in this city, and he is a man who is held in honor; all that he says comes true. So now let us go there. Perhaps he can tell us the way we should go.”

2 Kings 4:9 ESV: And she said to her husband, “Behold now, I know that this is a holy man of God who is continually passing our way.

2. Servant of the Lord

Emphasis on the close and holy relationships between God and His faithful messengers.

1 Kings 14:18 ESV: And all Israel buried him and mourned for him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spoke by his servant Ahijah the prophet.

2 Kings 9:7 ESV: And you shall strike down the house of Ahab your master, so that I may avenge on Jezebel the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the LORD.

Jeremiah 7:25 ESV: From the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt to this day, I have persistently sent all my servants the prophets to them, day after day.

3. Messenger of the Lord

Same word in Hebrew for messenger and angel. Angels are the Lord’s spiritual messengers, and the Lord’s prophets are messengers of His revealed word.

4. Seer

Two different Hebrew words that are translated “prophet” because they both have the root “to see”. Emphasis on divine revelation.

2 Sam. 24:11 ESV: And when David arose in the morning, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying,

2 Chronicles 29:25 ESV: And he stationed the Levites in the house of the LORD with cymbals, harps, and lyres, according to the commandment of David and of Gad the king’s seer and of Nathan the prophet, for the commandment was from the LORD through his prophets.

1 Chronicles 29:29 ESV: Now the acts of King David, from first to last, are written in the Chronicles of Samuel the seer, and in the Chronicles of Nathan the prophet, and in the Chronicles of Gad the seer,
