Good Friday | Pastor Chad Fagundes

Why is today good?

2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV: For our sake He made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Why did it have to be Jesus?

Romans 3:23-26 ESV: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

Today is good because God has displayed His justice while showing grace to mankind by redeeming us to Himself.

Three Characters that allow us to see ourselves in the story of Good Friday.

  1. Barabbas – The Great Exchange
    1. 1 Peter 1:18-19 NIV: For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.
  2. The Thief on the Cross – Divine Forgiveness
    1. Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV: For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.
  3. Nicodemus – The Sacrifice that changes us
    1. Romans 5: 6-8 NIV: You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Do you see yourself today?

  • The Criminal that got released- We are guilty, not Jesus.
  • The Thief on the cross- It’s not by anything we have done, but it’s based on what He has done.
  • The Religious man that was changed- His sacrifice impacts our souls. We don’t have to be the same as we once were.
