Wind, Fire & Oil | Pentecost Sunday | Pastor Andrew Cromwell
May 19, 2024 / Koinonia ChurchActs 2:1-4 NIV: When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Wind — Breathe on Us!
Fire — Consume Us!
Oil — Anoint Us!
Wind — Holy Spirit Fill Our Sails!
1. We must on the Wind.
2. We must on the Wind.
John 3:1-8 NLT: There was a man named Nicodemus, a Jewish religious leader who was a Pharisee. After dark one evening, he came to speak with Jesus. “Rabbi,” he said, “we all know that God has sent you to teach us. Your miraculous signs are evidence that God is with you.”
Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.”
“What do you mean?” exclaimed Nicodemus. “How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?”
Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.”
Without the Spirit:
-
-
- We cannot the kingdom of God (3)
- We cannot the kingdom of God (5)
- We cannot spiritual life (6)
- We cannot the movements of the Spirit (8)
-
With the Spirit:
-
-
- We can the kingdom of God
- We can the kingdom of God
- We can spiritual life
- We can the movements of the Spirit
-
Fire — Holy Spirit Consume Us!
Luke 3:16 ESV: …“I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming…He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
1. We are by the Fire.
Malachi 3:2-3 ESV: But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap. He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, and they will bring offerings in righteousness to the Lord.
2. We are by the Fire.
2 Corinthians 4:16 NIV: Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.
3. We are by the Fire.
1 Corinthians 3:12-13 NIV: If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work.
Oil — Holy Spirit Anoint Us
1. We are by the Oil.
2 Corinthians 1:21-22 NIV: Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
2. We are by the Oil.
1 John 2:20 AMP: But you have an anointing from the Holy One [you have been set apart, specially gifted and prepared by the Holy Spirit], and all of you know [the truth because He teaches us, illuminates our minds, and guards us from error].
Acts 8:14-17 ESV: Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, for he had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.
