GROWING IN THE PROPHETIC

(Developing the gift personally and in the church)

Joel 2:28 NKJV: “And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions.”

(Fulfilled 1000 years later in Acts 2)

Answering five questions: What, Why, Who, When and How…

WHAT:

Defined: To have an anointed, life-changing, life-giving word from the heart and mind of the Spirit of God for a specific situation that will build people and local churches. It will establish them in the purposes of God for their lives. It is to bubble forth a word from God in prayer, utterance, song, counseling, witnessing, etc. (Steve Williams)

Levels:

– Office of the Prophet

– Gift of prophecy

– Spirit of prophecy

Special emphasis on “Gift of prophecy”

* Prophecy is a gift of the Spirit. You don’t “grow” it, but it “grows you” and “grows in you.” * It’s a partnership – you’re the vessel.

Prophetic ministry is:

* Directional (and often predictive)

* Conformational

* Activational

WHY:

I Corinthians 14:1-5 NKJV: “Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.”

* Edification. (To build up)

* Exhortation. (To embolden)

* Comfort. (To lighten one’s burden)

Prophetic ministry is meant for the building up of individuals and groups.

WHO:

* Spiritual gifts belong to the Holy Spirit… so it’s not “your” gift, but His. * The Holy Spirit will flow through open & available vessels.

* When anointed by the Holy Sprit, anyone can prophecy!

WHEN:

* Lifestyle – anywhere & anytime

* Collective – prophetic worship, prayer & preaching

HOW:

* Fueled by love (motivation = love) 1 Cor 12, 13, 14 (love sandwich) * Ignited by prayer (expectancy & faith)

* Protected by banks (word & pastoral)

* Inspired by mentors

(Run alongside seasoned prophets)

ACTION STEPS:

* Desire the gift of prophecy

* Expect a release of the prophetic

* Prioritize prophetic flow (make room, create margin, be intentional)

* Practice the prophetic

* Grow in the prophetic
