Understanding Discipleship
- Discipleship is a call to Jesus.
Matthew 4:19 AMP: And He said to them, “Follow Me [as My disciples, accepting Me as your Master and Teacher and walking the same path of life that I walk], and I will make you fishers of men.”
1 Corinthians 8:1-3 ESV: …we know that “all of us possess knowledge.” This “knowledge” puffs up, but love builds up. If anyone imagines that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know. But if anyone loves God, he is known by God.
1 Corinthians 11:1 ESV: Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.
2. Discipleship is a call to for people.
Matthew 4:19 ESV: And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
3. Discipleship is a call to with other believers.
Acts 2:42 ESV: And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
1 John 1:7 ESV: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

Establishing Foundations
Matthew 7:24 ESV: Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
True Discipleship is the difference between a Foundation or a Facade.
Foundation: the basis or groundwork; the base on which a structure rests.
Façade: the front of a building; a superficial appearance or illusion of something.
1 Corinthians 10:12 NLT: If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall.
- Singular Focus: is the ultimate foundation.
1 Corinthians 3:11 ESV: For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 2:19-22 ESV: So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
- Radical
Matthew 7:24-25 ESV: “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.
- Real
2 Timothy 2:19 NLT: But God’s truth stands firm like a foundation stone with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and “All who belong to the Lord must turn away from evil.”
Luke 14:27 ESV: Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.
